A glorious story of Recovery

Mugdha: Hello everyone, welcome to this live which is Own Your Body Episode - Nine.

My name is Mugdha Pradhan. We are live with Amit and this own your body series is a different one because instead of me just speaking. We actually have somebody who's gone through the experience at Thrive and is going to be sharing what happened to him in this entire journey. I am so happy to have you on board Amit.

Amit: Thank you Mugdha, I'm also so happy to be here and sharing my experiences with you all.

Mugdha: So my name is Mugdha Pradhan. For those of you who are watching this for the first time, I am the founder of Thrive FNC. I'm a functional nutritionist. And what we do at Thrive is we reverse chronic illnesses from the root and today Amit is actually going to share the experience of how that is; Amit if you could tell the viewers what is it that you do?

Amit: I'm a businessman, I'm based out of Hyderabad. And I trade commodities and capital markets for my living. So, it's like I'm constantly under stress. Stress has been a part of my life for the last 25 years. 

Mugdha: And I think the lockdown made it worse right?  If I recollect our conversation.

Amit:Yes, it was very difficult dealing with the lockdown and post lockdown things were pretty bad and we have still not recovered it, but still, that's become a part of the game.

Mugdha: Alright. So Amit, I remember meeting you almost a year and a half ago now, right? 

Amit:  Yes we met in April 2019 in Shimla first. And I remember that evening very well. As we were having a bonfire sort of evening that night, and it was cold and what they say is, what you seek also seeks you. And at that time, I was probably at the lowest level of my life, dealing with so many ailments. And I was very curious to find out if someone can help me. In the previous edition of Life plugin, I met Pancham Parashar. He started the process with me, and he was helping me out. The results were not as I expected. And we were having a conversation around the bonfire when you heard us speaking. And then we had an interaction and I asked you about what you do. And that is when we started our conversation. Then I started sharing what problems I deal with. I shared with you what ailments I am confronting and what are the things I'm looking at. And you didn't tell me anything then you just smiled and then said you take my contact number and you talk to me once you are back in Hyderabad. And that is how it started from there. 

Mugdha: Yeah, so if you don't mind sharing with the audience, everything that was going on because I have this tendency to eavesdrop on any conversation like my radar for chronic illness is always ON. So that’s what happened with you as well. But if you could share with your audience what exactly was going on with you.

Amit: I had multiple problems. I had an ulcer in 2003, because I used to take a lot of painkillers then. I had an ulcer in my abdomen. And because of that, my doctors gave me an antacid to take every morning. So from 2003 to 2018, I was taking an antacid every day morning for 15 years because of which I had certain issues with my abdomen. I had IBS because of that I gained a lot of weight. I was weighing around 95-96 kgs then but I gained up to 112 kgs when we met in Shimla and then I was also having a problem with sleep apnea and acidity. There was not a day in those 16 years where I didn't have an acidity pill. Blood pressure and obviously obesity. So when I contacted the ENT surgeon for my sleep apnea issues. He suggested two remedies, either to lose weight or to go in for surgery. I thought I’m in a catch 22 situation. If I have to lose weight I need to sleep well. But because of the ailments, I'm not able to sleep well. What do I do with that? I was going around with these issues and talking to so many and you were probably deep down in the list for the number of people I must have contacted for this. And I must have spoken to more than 25 people all over the country. Nutritionists, dieticians, were reading so many books, articles following each and every diet, in fact, I took upon keto diet just a year before we met that caused me a lot of problems, rather than losing weight I gained a lot of more problems after that because I had kidney stones after that which I never had any problem. So, I just gave up on that and I thought it might not happen. And there are people who say that genetically you are built like this. So at a point in time I was made to believe in the theory that maybe it is genetic. And so, but after I met you and then we started having discussions over this, and I would definitely also give credit to Pancham Parashar for this because he instilled confidence back in me and he told me it's not genetic. You can do it. And the process started there and then when I met you. It gained momentum, and it just went on and on after that.

Mugdha: Super I didn't know. So Rutuja and I often joke about this. Rutuja takes care of business development; often people come to us like you did right; as they've gone through so many things and then they finally find us. And we say, that's why we call us a holistic nutritionist because they go through a whole list of people, a whole list of doctors, a whole list of other nutritionists before they actually come and meet us.

Amit: From India to any other country. I must have read so many articles so many books just for the sake of so many diets, just to see that I can start losing my weight because every time I tried harder to lose my weight I gained a few ounces of weight, just like that. 

Mugdha: Wow, so I knew you were in a lot of trouble when we spoke.. but it's been a year right so I actually forgot what was happening. So I was like Amit had acidity, Amit wanted to lose weight, I completely forgot about this sleep apnea issue. 

Amit: There was a point in time, wherein I did not sleep, I did not have a good night's sleep for almost six to seven months continuously, I used to sleep only for two to three hours a night; feel drowsy the next day, then come back and then I started using a CPAP machine at one point in time, but that was not working because it was not as efficient as it should be. It used to cause a lot of disturbance when I used to sleep so that was not working for me.

Mugdha: Wow. Okay, so I mean I know what we did for you but there are a lot of people who are curious about how we resolve all of these things right? So could you please tell them?

Amit: Yeah. The first thing was the kind of evaluations you do on the person that is the tests, it is a long list of tests and initially, I was skeptical and what are they going to do with so many tests, and when I consulted with the physician he was like are they nuts? What are they going to do with so many reports? And I thought I would probably have tried so many things. Let me give this a shot also. The best thing was the parameters on which you evaluate a person's health. In general medical terms, the reference range is quite big. So, the margin of error is quite large there and with us, the reference range is too small. So, the margin of error is small so what we are doing is; we are actually coming into a position where you know our health becomes near perfect. I’m just saying out of context when I showed my reports to my doctor in April 2020, sorry in May 2020 during the lockdowns. He told me Amit, these are one of the finest reports I've ever seen in anyone's life. There cannot be any deviation, and my mom was there with me in the clinic because she was a bit apprehensive about the kind of supplements I was taking. No milk in my diet and no gluten. So she wanted to talk to the doctor as to what I'm doing is right or wrong. And when my physician said that Aunty he is probably doing the best, and I've never seen these kinds of reports in my life so far.

Mugdha: Amazing. That's so good to hear. I mean, often we solve cases that doctors can’t but it's good to hear doctors also validating the outcome. Right?

Amit: Yeah he backed up the same things because he's also been on a dairy-free and gluten-free diet for almost 10 years, so he actually told my mom that this is probably the right thing he is doing.

Mugdha:Great, I think initially it was you and me who worked extensively and Swati came on board and then Swati has been your main coach for nearly a year now.

Amit: For the first six months you were there; I was coordinating with you. Then Swati came in, and this is the reason I got hooked onto the system because I felt it is very professional, and it suits me because I don't have to run and chase people, for any of my queries. I just had to send a message on WhatsApp, on my group and I got the answers immediately. So, it's not a one time process. It's been a continuous journey so there have been so many times when I have queries and I have doubts. When there are supplements that are not available then we need to talk about alternatives. When I'm traveling, it's been continuous. I know if it is one time, then it leaves more doubt than clarity. Because the way it is programmed. And it's that I have a query with Swati if she is not able to; but didn't have any problem with Swati as such or she's not been able to handle it. But even if she doesn't she makes sure that she speaks to you or anyone in the group, and she reverts immediately. That's been one of the finest things about this. And it feels so safe that you know that you're taken care of. 

Mugdha: I think Swati is really amazing at that. I think she will just take care of you and be there for you.

Amit:  Yeah. I mean, let me tell you she's very strict. I have never feared even my teacher like this. She doesn't budge a nail; she doesn't give leave or God knows how many times I've tried to take leverage out of her but she doesn't.

Mugdha: Hahahahaha.. Yeah I know this happens. I know because I'm there in the group but yeah she's pretty phenomenal, making sure that you reach your health goals.

Amit: I mean, I tried a few times and I was traveling last year. I was traveling abroad and I wanted to have some leverage so that in case if I don't get food to eat, then I can take it. But she said No, take it from here. I thought okay because I cannot supersede her, and I have to abide by what she says. 

Mugdha: Great. So what did you really learn out of all those blood tests. Do you remember what the root causes were or what was really going on like sleep apnea and all of that?

Amit: Yes, very clearly because the first thing was about sugar, insulin sensitivity. Not many people only check the blood sugar levels, but the insulin resistance and the insulin sensitivity thing I didn't know prior to that. And when you made me aware that these are the reasons why I'm not losing weight, I started to focus on that for the first time. And normally what used to happen is when anyone gets their test done, doctors only see the blood sugar levels, and they judge whether they are prone to diabetes or not, but this is the first time I learned about insulin resistance and insulin sensitivity. Then about other factors, I mean LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, about iron deficiency, about B12 deficiency, of Vitamin D, and then a whole lot of things. I was deficient in iron also so we covered that. Then, for the first time I learned about the supplements, that kind of detail because you prescribe a lot of supplements, a whole lot of people say that supplements are not good and they should not take up supplements and all your supplements, all your vitamin deficiency or vitamin needs should be through your food. It is not possible I believe, because of the kind of system we live in. We cannot eat that much. So, in a way, I learned about supplements as to how to use them, and when to use them. And the kind of effects they have on our body. And the biggest myth was busted when I was a food lover all my life; coming from a Marwadi family and you understand what kind of affiliation we have with food, all our celebrations, all our sorrows were linked to food. So it was food all the way through. So, one, I was hooked on milk and dairy products. That is a big-time in our families and in our community. Then a whole lot of things so when I got to know the kind of foods I was consuming was not conducive for my health. And when I stopped eating them or when I stopped consuming them. That is when the results started to show. Initially, it felt like deprivation to begin with, I thought I mean, these are all basic things and how can I ever live without all these things, but it actually you know, it's just a matter of time where you start to fall in love with alternate options which are available. It's about the mindset, which I realized, you know, normally when you talk about a diet. When you talk about, you know, doing something, you start to think about being deprived, you know, as if you are giving up on something. It's not that easy. It's just that you're finding better alternatives. When we started mobile phones we used to have mobile phones which we used to talk only on the phone and send messages. But we have smartphones now. So it's not about giving up on those, it's just adapting to better ones.

Mugdha: Absolutely I completely agree, and this I think this perspective is what has really helped you stay on this journey right because for you it was not just about those three months that you partnered with us initially because we did so many things then I'm glad you brought up the supplements point also because a lot of people feel like you know you shouldn't be taking anything extra but if you're not eating animal foods in large quantities and if you're just mostly plant-based and vegetarian then deficiencies do crop up. For eg..  we saw such an improvement in sleep and everything for you after magnesium was added. So really glad that you brought those points up.

Amit: It's all about restoring the balance and enjoying what you're doing, and if the mindset is not there. Even if you go to a doctor and if you start feeling that you're being treated for something and if you've been taken for a ride that you'll probably not recover the way it should be. It's all about enjoying the process.

Mugdha: Right. And I think that that perspective shift that you made in your mind right that this is about the longer greater returns and I'm going to get overtime and I mean a lot of people even when we talk to them initially they're like oh I have to give up dairy and how am I going to live. How did you really feel? I know you didn't feel deprived of there were various alternatives, but could you share some, like milk or something you had for so many years of your life right.

Amit: I had milk for almost 43 years, probably, you know, I felt after initial stages, your taste buds change and then stop craving for those foods like for milk. I used to have two cups of tea every day, morning, in the afternoon, or evening, but in the last 14 months, I must have not drunk more than three or four cups of tea, that also when I'm traveling or when I'm at a place when I cannot say no, so I never felt that I should be drinking tea or having milk products or having dairy. In my family, I mean my parents, my wife, my children, they do have because they still believe that in that method, but it's okay. We have dinner together every day. But I never feel the need for me to have that. The biggest thing is you know the joy of achieving something, It supersedes the pain of giving up on what you have given up. I think the biggest thing is the way I have gained my health, and the confidence it has given back to me. The way my life has changed dramatically post this. I think giving up anything is a very small price which you pay for that.

Mugdha: I know like you have suffered for so long. Right? So anything that comes as a solution; then that's the thing we tell people also right so if you're somebody who wants to keep having coffee or tea; that coffee or tea is not really doing anything for you so it's not like we take something that's a positive right, you're actually something that has no role to play anyway in your good health. So that mindset shift is what really helps a lot of people. So great. Good to hear that. So I think the time we've spent together we never had a chance to talk this much in-depth about how things have already been.

Amit: No we didn't. I've been a disciplined student all the way.

Mugdha: You really are. That’s why people need to hear your story because it's really inspiring right like you came from a place of your health being really in a bad place right so many things going on concurrently it wasn't just sleeping it wasn't just weight, your sleep and weight, and acidity and digestion, there are so many things together right so from there to where you know what is your current status, you could share that?

Amit: I started at 112 kgs. When we started I was 112 kgs in October 2018. By the time we met. I was around 106 kgs in April 2019. Now I'm at 86.5 something that looks almost like a 26 kgs drop. And initially, I didn't have this plan that I had planned to have now. I didn't plan to go to 75, but I do it now. And then I also know that the way I have progressed, I have no doubt in my mind that year from now, I'll have a dream body. And I'm pretty confident about it.

Mugdha:You will! What about your acidity and all of that? How's that?

Amit: That's gone. It's almost around 9 to 10 months, wherein I didn't have any acidity pill. And even when I go to a doctor for any of the treatments, and they give me any antibiotics, I make it a point to tell them that don't give me any antacids because my body's not good enough to resist that if it's very serious necessary you give me the medicine, I'll manage without acidity pills so it has been the case, all the way. There is no acidity now my blood pressure is around 115 or 120  by 80 for almost 14 months. All other parameters you know the best because you have the reports with you or you evaluated it continuously. I've been doing very well on my health,, and the results have been evident in all the other areas of my life.

Mugdha: Your college friends tell you look younger than you used to look then Right?

Amit:I mean the kind of compliments I've got for this are amazing people who have seen me or met me after say 12 or 14 months. They are completely shocked even by my trainers who used to treat me in my past. They were completely taken. I mean what is that happened to you, and people asked me, this cannot happen naturally either you must have gone through bariatric surgery, it cannot happen naturally, and that is the kind of feedback I got. A lot of people do tell me that did you go through a surgery? Why should I go to surgery? There are natural processes, there are people who can help you in this. If you are interested I will introduce you to them.

Mugdha: And thank you so much I think a couple of your sisters came on board. And you really have been spreading the word. And that's what I really like about Thrive, like what we do right that there is this tribe element and bring on more and more people in this network. 

Amit: Yes. Exactly

Mugdha: Yeah, yeah, that's pretty amazing what happens in the tribe right but it's great so you're acidity gone. Your BP is absolutely like, what would we consider normal. Right. Your digestion has also improved. Right?

Amit: Yeah. Everything I mean there are no digestive problems, no ailments as of now. I cannot complain of anything. I think in the last 14 months I must have had a headache, one or two times.

Mugdha: Okay. How is your sleep now; I think your sleep is also better?

Amit: Sleep is better but I think this corona thing there was a slight disturbance, mostly because of some other issues and I probably know because a lot of stress and our businesses were not doing well and there were other issues but I was not concerned about it. I knew, once the stress levels are down I'll continue to sleep well and also started doing some meditations and listening to some audios which can de-stress me a lot. So that's been going fine for me.

Mugdha: Great, so good to hear you know sometimes we work with so many people and then we work with blood tests right and then sometimes we forget to check-in, after a point that we know, Amit is doing well. He is doing fine. So, sometimes it really helps to even like, come back and talk to you like this and listen to everything good that's going on with you in life.

Amit: So it's been a terrific thing. The biggest thing about this is that what I have done here, I have replicated these models in other areas of my life.

Mugdha: I was going to ask you that.

Amit: It's been such a study. Normally we want results fast. We are not process-oriented people; we are result-oriented people. So one thing this has taught me is that it's all about processes. I mean, I don't have to worry about results as long as the processes are fine that one thing which I have applied in other areas of my professional life. It was all about result-driven, what is the kind of money you're making every year or month on month basis or a quarterly basis because being a businessman. That is the most important thing we work for right now, after starting to work with Thrive. This is what I've realized it is not about the bigger things. It is what you do on a day to day basis, it is the kind of routines you have that determines how successful you are in your life.

Mugdha: Wow the principles of what we're doing for your food you do to the rest of other aspects of your life is exactly what you are saying?

Amit: I'll tell you about making dietary changes. I don't think that’s a bigger change if you look at your life in the whole context of it. It is a very small change, but that small change has a profound impact on your life. So, coincidentally, I read that book. Atomic Habits by James Clear.

Mugdha: Oh my goodness that's my favorite. And it’s right here. See. I've completely underlined it all over and it's my favorite.

Amit: It's a complete game-changer. What happens. Normally, when anyone goes to a dietitian, I've been through 25 so I know what is the system, they give you a diet which says that you have to lose 500 calories a day or 700 calories a day, that is the kind of calorie deficit you need to have in order to lose weight; how that 700 calorie has to be done and how that 500 calorie has to be done. Okay. By food, you can do 200-300. I want a system where I don't want anything with 300 500 calorie deficits, I want pretty small things in my life, which I can do on a day to day basis, which can give me a 15-20 calorie deficit. Today, I don't take the elevator normally like my flat is on the fifth floor of the building, and my office is on the third floor of the building. So it's evident for me that I walk down the stairs and climb the stairs every day to my office and my home. I know that if I do that, even once every day, it will give me a 20 calorie deficit. That's it. When I'm talking to people on the phone. If I am on a call which will take 20 minutes, I go out on the veranda and start to walk as I keep talking to people when I'm walking. Hmm. So this was one example. Then chewing my food 32 times. I mean, eating very slowly. Drinking water after 45 minutes after I eat food, and not drinking a lot of cold water. It can be warm water. Listening to good music at least 30 minutes every day, so that it can de-stress me a lot. These are the small things that you can incorporate in your life. I am just looking for 15-20 calorie cuts. I don't want anything big. Today, I mean, I park my vehicle at a distant place in my office, it takes me around 10-11 minutes to walk to my car. Earlier it used to be in the basement of the building. Now, deliberately have taken a parking lot for which I have to work for around 8 to 10 minutes. So it's always that I'm not looking for a big workout schedule. I mean post-Corona gyms were closed you don't like to work out. But these small changes can give me 15-20 calorie cuts that have kept me in shape. Before the lockdown started, I was weighing 92.5 kg. On March 23, it is 86.5 now. And in the last five months, there have been no workouts.

Mugdha: Yes. So these small habits and actually how you monitor your health overall that really matters and I think even in terms of  filling up our tracker like a lot of the people who come on our program have so much trouble with the tracker daily updation right but you have been one of the most disciplined. Of Course, a few times Swati has to remind; I have seen Swati’s message to complete your tracker. Otherwise 90%, you have been really disciplined. I think that discipline is what really has helped you, overall also. Right?

Amit: That is what I'm saying. My dad used to always tell me you don't fumble at a big rock, you almost fumble at the smallest things because that becomes invisible to you. Okay, so need to be careful about the small invisible things which you have in your life. So, it's I mean it's very it's an age-old saying, which says, ‘Success is defined by your daily routine.’ So, very important to have a routine which fits, which gives me what I want.

Mugdha: It's really good to hear that you could apply the learnings of whatever we've done at with Thrive-In-3 and then the year-long program that you've been with us and then you could, you know, integrate that to the rest of your life and bring this result in so many other places; it's really great. So I have one question for you but that would be the last question because we were scheduled to speak only for half an hour. So there are a lot of people watching this there are people that are watching you and how inspiring you are, if you had to, you know, like, one takeaway you had them to just pick up one thing from this conversation with us with the conversation that we're having right now what would be the one thing that you would want everyone to kind of take away from this 30 minutes of listening.

Amit: The first thing would absolutely be to have faith in the system, people who are with you. Because faith can move mountains and if you don't have faith that probably you will always mentally you will never be committed to the process, and make the smallest possible changes in your life. Don't look for the big changes, don't look for that one magical rant like going to sleep overnight with 100 kg days and wake up with 95 kgs, that's never gonna happen. Celebrate small victories, take one day at a time, and keep the processes intact. Work on the processes results will come invariably.

Mugdha: That's really great. That's amazing. And if anyone has any questions; we could look at them now. Because I mean if you have any questions for Amit about how he really went through this entire thing. What did he eat? What his diet was like 26 kgs of weight loss is pretty phenomenal. Thank you. I can see Swati is laughing a lot at what you said about her being strict and all. So, I don't see too many questions but thank you for coming Amit and thank you for sharing your insights so much, I mean I am really grateful to have people like you in the tribe because you know one is actually the faith you've shown us. And, you know, the belief and like you actually brought in a lot of family members on board but you know having people like you is what really makes us do more of the work we do because when somebody like you go through beautiful transformations then it becomes such a positive feedback loop for us that, you know, there is a reason for us to do more of what we do. So it's really amazing. Swati wants to know, How did your exercise performance improve over time? Because she's been helping you throughout.

Amit: Exercise was good but unfortunately, because of the lockdowns, my exercise schedules have become slightly bad. I'm not able to work out much, and I don't want to start going to the gym very soon still. So pre- lockdown it was amazing. My strength training, even my stamina had gone to I mean I was running almost 5 and a half kilometers, non stop in 25-30 minutes so that was all going very well. I’ll have to start it back again, and take some more time to start working out, probably a month or let's wait for the situation to resolve and as it improves I’ll start working on workouts.

Mugdha: Rutuja is saying this is very inspiring. I’m telling you, your story is really inspiring. 

Amit: Thank you so much Mugdha. 

Mugdha: It's really worthy of being brought out and shared with so many people and that's why I just wanted to do this with you.

Amit: To your team, you and Swati and everyone that is out my gratitude for this being with me, standing by me and helping me all the way through this process. And I'm so glad that I'm a part of this journey. 

Mugdha: Great, good, to speak with you. I think we should do more of these that we bring like really inspiring Thrive members and share their stories. Because, who knows somebody else might be going through something that you have gone through something similar.

Amit: Yes.

Mugdha: They might just think that there's no answer like how people told you that you did the surgery? They think surgery is the answer. It is so easy it takes time, but it is so easy to do with food.

Amit: It’s a long term process because now I have a plan that if  I mean, I cannot say how long I'm going to live but in case if I happen to live long enough, and I would continue to live stronger fitter and healthier for all my life.

Mugdha: Absolutely. That's one thing that I tell people right, it's not really about increasing your lifespan, because your lifespan can be increased by a machine like you can do dialysis, you can do ventilator. But it’s about increasing your health span as long as you live; you are healthier that matters the most.

Amit: Yes. It’s the quality of life which matters the most.

How to boost the Immune system?

Hello! My name is Mugdha Pradhan and I’m the founder of Thrive FNC and we make diseases disappear.

So here we go, How does one boost the immune system? Stay till the end because I will be sharing the super-secret recipe right at the end of this session, which is of this tea that has really been instrumental in helping people recover within a day or two from random viral infections that have happened not just now with Covid-19 but even the past three years. It’s a secret recipe that Thrive has invented and I’m going to share that with you. So, stay connected!

Let’s start with What is immunity?

Immunity is a word that's been thrown around a lot, but if somebody had to ask you what is immunity- it’s two things. Either a good immune system offers you protection from pathogens and toxins, or a good immune system offers you resistance- so in case these things come into your body, your immune system is going to keep you protected. It's going to make sure that these pathogens and toxins don't harm you. And a healthier immune system won't even let these come into your body- it will just reject them outright. So, offering protection and resistance from pathogens and toxins is what a good immune system does and that is what it means to have good immunity.

I will talk about why we started talking about the immune system even before this COVID-19 thing happened. A lot of people who came to us for our consultations would often report random symptoms and they wouldn't know that these are the symptoms of actually having a dysfunctional immune system. So our immune system has two components one is your innate immunity; the immunity that you were born with.

And second is the adaptive immunity, so every time we're exposed to a new virus or a new toxin your body learns how to deal with that and then responds appropriately the next time you're exposed to that virus; this is what immunity building is all about. So, let's say there's a new virus in town, you're exposed to it. Your body reacts to it, your body fights with it, your body deals with it kills it and then in the end you have adaptive immunity towards that virus or that bacteria or that toxin. That is what your immune system is supposed to do. So the innate one is what you're born with, and the adaptive one is what happens as you go through life.

 And, you know, there are nearly 280 million I can't even remember the final number but there are that many viruses and bacteria in this world. We are 90% microbial DNA, only 10% human DNA. There are entire research studies about it so you know viruses aren't new; they've been on this planet much before humans came in, and we have them in our personal microbiomes. The problem is when the balance of the good ones goes down and when the bad ones come up that's when you start experiencing diseases.

So, there is really no point in drowning yourself in sanitizer because you are meant to have bacteria and viruses and fungi and parasites and all of them do different things in the body.

 Now, I spoke of how people came to us in our consultations with random symptoms and, you know, they wouldn't even know that this is the sign of a poor immune system. So most people know that getting fevers and colds, often is a sign of a really weak immune system, but often being tired, like this person in this picture is like alarms going off, but he's totally cool.

So being really tired feeling fatigue, having digestive issues- you're not being able to digest your food properly or having IBS or constipation also could be a sign that the immune system in the gut not functioning well, delayed wound healing- and issues like psoriasis, eczema, acne are also signs of the weakened immune system. This also is an indicator that your immune system is having a lot of trouble dealing with the toxins and the pathogens that are there in the environment. Not feeling well in life is also an indicator of having a weak immune system.

 Now, how does one boost the immune system right? What does it take to have a really well functioning immune system? and How does one boost it? How does one make it better than what it is?

It's not complicated, but it requires a certain level of understanding of how the body functions. So, do you know what makes a good immune system?

You need nutrients, detoxification and you need to make sure that you don't have any diabetes or insulin resistance going around in your body, you need to make sure that you're getting enough sunlight; you need to make sure you're moving again (I'll tell you why) and you need to make sure your sleep is good too.

Why do you need the right nutrients?

Because nutrients are the raw material that your body uses to make the components of the immune system if you remember in the earlier slides that I spoke of innate and adaptive immunity, there are a lot of tiny things on the surface. These are different kinds of cells that your body creates as a part of your immune system; now these things need proteins, vitamin D, and also need all the complex vitamins. They need vitamin C. They need vitamin D. All of these things go into making ingredients of a really good immune system so you need the right kind of nutrients.

Second, you need to make sure that you don't have diabetes or insulin resistance going on in your body. Last week I  did a FB live about diabetes and the connection to Covid-19 because innumerable research studies are proving that anyone with diabetes, anyone with insulin resistance, and then, of course with the other metabolic health conditions like obesity and hypertension, is a much bigger risk of a poor outcome from Covid-19 and not just Covid-19, any infection would make it bad for your body if you had diabetes as an underlying issue.

 So, first, make sure you have the right nutrients. Secondly, make sure you do not have insulin resistance and diabetes- if you already have that we can help you fix it. This is what we do; we reverse diabetes all the time because Indians are the world's leaders in diabetes, we have a genetic predisposition towards diabetes, so please watch my last session. It will really help you understand diabetes and the immune system connection. The third is to detoxify because if you have the toxic overload in your body your immune system gets compromised because the body's continuously trying to excrete these toxins. So, your resources are being utilized just for that in this scenario with if a new pathogen comes in, your body will find it very hard to deal with this. So, make sure your toxin levels are low.

 Secondly, if you have a lot of tissue that has toxins in them, often viruses and bacteria go and find that diseased tissue and then start doing the replication work there. So, removing toxins from your body is essential for maintaining a good immune system. Third, then comes sun exposure and you can see how happy this lady is when she's out in the sun, most of us really like being in the sunshine and feeling happy. My yellow dress today is part of that sunshine code but sun exposure does something really important, it helps your body make vitamin D. Vitamin D is extremely integral to have a fully functioning immune system. Again with COVID people who look seemingly healthy; you know the young ones who died or the ones who are not obese and they died they had severe Vitamin D deficiencies and people are like COVID can attack anyone. 

It's not really that if you look at the correlation between the vitamin D levels and the outcome of a COVID-19 infection those with lower levels are the ones who had the worst time with COVID-19. So, getting enough vitamin D in your body is really important. Sun exposure does a lot of other good things also which again if I start talking about it will go for a two-hour session but sun exposure is really important to keep your immune system high. I mean, at a high level.

 ‘Move.’

So I wouldn't say the word exercise as much as I like using the word move because exercise makes you think of exercising for one hour in the gym and being sedentary and that one hour in the gym is not as beneficial as moving throughout the day. Maybe one day I would do a session on movement with my own trainer he goes by the handle movementmechanic.in. Go check it out. He makes really good points about how movement throughout the day is important. But when you move it helps your body get from a metabolic low-efficiency state and it keeps your metabolic efficiency at a higher state and that is very important in ensuring a better place.

And the last point sleep, I cannot emphasize how important sleep is because what sleep does and what happens during sleep is a restorative and regenerative process so there's a lot of repair work that happens during that period. So, if you're not sleeping then your body doesn't get an opportunity to repair itself. So, sleeping at a set time and waking up at a set time every day is the best thing you can do in your system. A lot of people have trouble with good quality sleep. That's again something we help people with because that can happen due to multiple reasons so we have to find your sleep qualities and we can help you with that.

Now how do you know if you have all of these things working well for you or not and that's what I want to talk about it's really important to find your own personal immunity status so we do our work with blood test we always begin when somebody comes to us for like a health issue like Fibromyalgia or PCOD or diabetes.

 We always begin our work with a blood test. And even when it comes to understanding somebody's immunity, your blood test is where the answer lies because if you see this one you can see the signs of deficiencies that are visible here right so many deficiencies be B12, B6, vitamin C, and then you can see that the immune system is also compromised, all the components of the WBC the white blood cells are not working well. 

You can see that there is a severe level of inflammation, there are a lot of these allergies, there are toxins that are there so getting your blood tests done will let us know if you if you're deficient in any of the nutrients I spoke of earlier, it will let us know if you have diabetes and insulin resistance which has not been detected by conventional medicine yet. It will help us know if there’s toxin overload.

 If your vitamin D levels are really low sun exposure is not going to do it quickly. You will need to supplement with good quality vitamin D and again with vitamin D if you over supplement, it can lead to calcification in the kidney. So, you have to be very careful with supplements, it will let us know if you're having adrenal dysfunction because the sleep is not going well. So, my recommendation to everyone, honestly, at this time, is to get your blood test done and find out where you are because you know what, like right now there's a first wave going on it's at the end like lockdowns have been lifted. We are seeing that the number of cases is increasing. So, I'll get to what I'll talk of, when will this coronavirus pandemic be over. But my recommendation is that everyone gets their blood test done now, because, you know, you're going to need time to figure out how to fix it before things could get worse in case.

Okay, so moving on.

What are the foods that you should eat and what are the nutrients you need to get through food?

 So, for a good immune system, you need very good quality protein. You need your all your B complex vitamins so your B1, B2, B6 to B12  all of those complex vitamins is something that you need; you need your vitamin C, you need vitamin D, which is a little hard to get from food, it's easier to take vitamin D from exposure to the sun and then supplementing and then you need zinc which is a critical nutrient when it comes to good immune system. Where are these nutrients found in the largest density? 

So my take is, doing this for nearly three years working with people. What I've seen is animal foods are the most nutrient dense when it comes to all of these nutrients now. Ideally, in India, of course, beef is not possible but red meat like Mutton. I don't recommend fish too much because seafood is clearly contaminated with a lot of toxins in the ocean. Eggs are also good as well.

If you're a vegetarian for ethical religious reasons and you just can't tolerate the idea of eating meat, then pulses and legumes are where you might take your protein from. You can get zinc from pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and can get zinc a little bit from sesame seeds. Vitamin C though you'll get it from oranges, kiwis and sometimes from broccoli.If you had to ask me the most nutrient-dense food that will give you a lot of these nutrients without having to struggle so much I would recommend liver, either beef liver, mutton liver, because that has a punch of nutrients and the problem with this is it is tough you know this is a very generic recommendation what happens to a lot of people is they're often sensitive to different kinds of food, especially the ones who are vegetarians and cannot think of eating meat.

You might be sensitive to a lot of foods that you're eating and that can build up your toxin load. So, there are foods that are very high in oxalates for example. Now these oxalates can build up in your body and they give you their own diseases which might mimic an immune system not being good but it's because of the oxalate, so with food why I don’t give generic advice, I really think it's important that each person finds out what works for their body best because like I said when we do the blood test and we find out there maybe 10 things that are going wrong, then you need to find out which foods are going to help fix those 10 things without adding on too many additional problems in the body so that's what we do.

 Okay so you know chickpeas give you a problem if you're a vegetarian then maybe we can do some low oxalate pulses like maybe red gram tur or we can do maybe some rice, which is low in oxalates and still continue to create a personalized menu plan. That's what we do in those three months. So, if you're a non-vegetarian and then you're worried about saturated fat or you're worried about knowing the quality of meat you're eating or forgetting all the other nutrients. We can help you figure that out if you're a vegetarian, and you really don't know where to get your protein from, talk to us and we'll help you create your own personalized plan that's what we do primarily.

 Now, this is about what you should be eating, and then we move on to the biggest question that everyone has had; when does this pandemic end? Coronavirus Kab Khatam Hoga?

 So the virus really doesn't end, what happens is people become immune to it as a community.

So sitting at home, social distancing doing lockdowns is of no use because, at some point or the other, you are going to be exposed to this virus which is part of our ecosystem it's part of our environment it's there.

So secondly you can be afraid of it and try to isolate yourself but if you intend to be a social creature like most human beings are designed to be, you are going to be exposed to it and it is a good thing because that is how the herd community is built. As the virus starts moving on, more and more people get exposed to it more and more people become immune to it, they recover from it and then overall the community becomes immune to the virus and then the virus doesn't affect us. That is how you build immunity to a virus.

So that's why I say the community is your immunity. Alone you cannot be immune to anything; only when the community achieves immune status, then you really have herd immunity. This is how a pandemic ends, is this really a pandemic. Is this as grown-up as it is, as the media makes it out to be not the topic for discussion, you can go check my Facebook feed and then you will see what my opinion about that is, but even if it was assumed this is a pandemic. This is the only way to end the pandemic with herd immunity. 

So, then the question that a lot of people have been asking me, which is the most interesting question but I won't have enough time to talk about it. Is there a cure for coronavirus?

 No, there isn’t. The vaccine is not the answer. The only cure for a pandemic is exposure, build herd immunity and make sure your personal immune response is so strong that no virus can collapse. That is your job, your job is not to sit in, put sanitizer all over yourself, your job is not to buy the biggest and the prettiest mask and wear it on your face. That is not it, that is what the government is asking you to do that's what media is asking you to do the only thing that one needs to do is build your immunity, take responsibility for your health, build your immunity so when you're exposed to any virus in the future whether Covid-19 or Shitshow-20.

It doesn't matter what the name of the virus is as long as you build your own personal immunity and then the question is when should you do it. At what point of time should you start building your immunity when I would say the time is now because already they are talking of a second wave and it's quite likely that won't happen because in winter, the flu season is on anyway and maybe by October November, you might have a second wave of the viruses that can come.

 Now, at that point of time if your body is not ready to fight the virus, you are going to experience really a difficult time, so the time to build your immunity is today. It is now and now is the time to start. You have three months before the second wave comes. Do it now.

Going on to the vaccine, a lot of people are like vaccines will come, I can take a vaccine and go out kind of a thing which is, I find it ridiculous because if you knew what vaccines did to the human body you'd never think of a vaccine as a cure. And I really do not have time to talk about vaccines right now but about maybe a month ago, we did a live session on vaccines, it was nearly one and a half hours. Some of the best speakers who understood vaccines in depth were on board and five of us did a vaccine live. It's on Thrive FNC’s YouTube channel, please go watch it if you are somebody who's waiting for a vaccine as a cure.

Trust me on this vaccine is not a cure, vaccines do nothing to grow your adaptive or innate immunity. It's just something that the pharmaceutical companies actually create for a lot of chronic health problems because they have fetal genetic material they have dog and cat DNA in there, go watch this talk, and learn what vaccines really are, and then decide what you should be doing or you should be building your immunity with natural systems that I showed just six things, food, sleep, sun exposure, detoxification, movement, and I forgot what the last one was but maybe we'll go back to the slide because for me it's just these six things.

Instead of waiting for one injection to cure, it is important to build your immunity. Okay, if you are someone eagerly waiting for the vaccine to come, Go watch this vaccine talk on Youtube which we did a month ago. It will really give you a lot of insights on what vaccines are.

Oh, I forgot to ask this question. I hope people didn't see the slide so I had told my team that if anybody guesses us the ingredients of this secret concoction that we have. I will offer them a free consultation.

 So, I tell you why this is so special. So this is something that we invented because we kind of found out all the herbs from the kitchen that had antiviral antibiotic effects, I wouldn't recommend drinking concoction or tea like this on a daily basis because even the ingredients in this if consumed every day would have a negative effect, but if you're experiencing an infection. Then at a time like this, it really works well.

One and a half weeks ago I experienced the beginning of a really nasty viral infection. My throat was all itchy, scratchy, hurting and swollen. I drank this throughout the day, I just took my zinc. I took an extra dose of vitamin D and I'm telling you in 24 hours I was out of it.

So, there is turmeric in it, there is black pepper and then there is oregano and then thyme in it. So, all of these are antiviral and antibacterial when taken for a short while you have an active infection. Do not overindulge in it because each of them then can interfere with your detoxification pathways but it's very simple to make.

 You just have to boil one cup of water, and add these ingredients, boil it for another 10 minutes and then links to cover it and let it steep for five minutes and then you could add honey after the boiling is completed one teaspoon of raw organic wild Honey which is not pasteurized and then drink it hot and share this with your family and friends I'm telling you this is like a superpower tea it really cuts down infection time it really does I've seen it work not just in my case but almost everyone sees who gets infections, right. Q. Where do you get zinc?

A. Okay, so you can check Thrive’s website we do have a supplements link, which is linked to Amazon supplements but you know before you start supplementing with anything it's really important to know what is your internal status because we don't want you to get an overdose of any nutrient right, anything in excess also is bad, even vitamin D. So always get your blood test done, then find out what your internal status is and then learn if you need to supplement.

Q. Any suggestions on how to detox toxins from tissues?

A. Yes, but detox also takes a little planning so first, we have to make sure your body's resources are right and then it actually needs good levels of protein.I did a session on toxins and detoxification two weeks ago. It is available on our YouTube channel, you could go watch that and then after that, if you have any questions, I could answer those. If you do your blood test and come, I could help you figure out what really needs to be done.

 Q. Would you say that there's a certain quantity beyond protein intake that can be harmful?

A. Sure, but I find that most people aren't even consuming the bare minimum level of protein that they need. Depending on if you are vegetarian or non-vegetarian.

 Q. Is it very important to do blood tests?

A. It is really important because if you overdose, then for example vitamin D; too much of vitamin D will then start utilizing calcium and then magnesium status will start getting depleted; then your omega -3 will start affecting,  any nutrient deficiency is bad right so it's always good to get tested before you start supplementing. Do not supplement randomly and you know what I don't even recommend calcium supplements until I know that there is a significant calcium deficiency. If your diet is very high in oxalate and calcium can start binding with oxalate that is creating stones so it's really better to get your blood tests done and then figure out whether you need a supplement and then which kind of supplement because if you do have high oxalate then you need calcium citrate. If you don't, maybe some other calcium will work for you and maybe you don’t need to take calcium at all.

Q. Any other micronutrients needed to boost immunity?

A. I spoke of vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc and all the B complex vitamins, these are really critical for immunity specifically you need a lot of other nutrients in your body you need magnesium, for example, to make sure all the systems are running well. But zinc is the most critical one.

Q. Can you please let me know if our diet provides us enough of these nutrients if we are taking a balanced diet?

A. This would be an individual answer to your question. Better we talk after the session, set up something and then we can talk about what it is that you're eating and, like, figure out if it's really a balanced diet or not.

Q. What Indians follow is a balanced diet or not?

A. No, I wouldn't call that a balanced diet, we eat a lot of polyunsaturated fatty acids, we have a lot of refined oils in our food every cuisine right so it's not just Maharashtrian or it's not just South Indian, not just North Indian. Every cuisine uses a lot of refined oils in their cooking, and that is not a balance at all that should be there that it begins from there. It starts with that. Even if you don't have sugar and jaggery right, most of us are cooking with oil and that ends up putting a lot of polyunsaturated fatty acids in our diet and that puts in too much omega six and that is what really creates this insulin resistance and diabetes that's why Indians are the worst in diabetes; the one reason is our genes, of course. Secondly, the amount of refined oil that we use in our food is very high, most Indian diets have chapati as one of the main courses and there is not a good balance of protein, fat, and carbs in Indian diets, I would disagree with that, that's why. See if we were eating the right food, we would have been a healthy population, and if we were a healthy population COVID would come and go and nothing would have happened to us. But if you're looking at what the media says the status is, I really doubt how bad it is, but people are dying, they're often dying because of other comorbidities. In fact, two years ago I was looking at the data 58 lakh people died because of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart problems and high bp that's I don't know as of today how many COVID deaths are there but I'm sure it's 1% of the 58 lakhs. It's definitely not as high as that. So, more people died of chronic diseases in India and they've died of any infection, and if Indian food was really that balanced, we wouldn't have this chronic disease epidemic that was happening so no our diet is not balanced. It is deficient in nutrients; it's called the wrong ratios of all nutrients macros and micros.

Q. What is your say on immunity pills which people are randomly taking during this pandemic?

A. I really don't know what those are, like, I don't understand how you can get immunity in pills, because then if immunity was available in a pill. Nobody would have poor immune systems like we just take up and be happy your immunity is made by your body. There are some homeopathic medicines that can help with your immune response but if you have diabetes, if you have deficiencies we're not taking it I'm saying if you're not getting enough protein What can one tablet do maybe a placebo effect maybe it will just give you peace of mind and taking the standards of COVID and maybe that kind of creates a sense of immunity around you but that's not really going to create a good immune system you need to do this work. You have to do this on your own and then your immune system will reward you with the kind of response it's supposed to give you, you cannot take a pill and have a good immune response.

Q. Do you think alcohol intake affects immunity?

A. Of course, it does. It actually impacts a liver pretty badly. Your liver plays a major role in your immune system. Also, your liver is a place where a lot of your nutrients are stored, a lot of your nutrients are metabolized, your protein breakdown re-synthesis your fat metabolism, all of that happens in the liver. Plus, your glucose stores in the liver so if you drink alcohol you're basically hurting your liver and then because the liver is hurt, it can do its job then and that impacts our entire immune system so you know the worst thing that the government did was it opened up all liquor stores and closed down gyms. How is that going to help anyone respond better to a virus? I don't understand how you can drink alcohol and become healthier instead of going to a gym and working out, and more or less not a good idea if you are looking at boosting your immune system.

Q. How can we stop hair fall, I’m  having multivitamins and a balanced diet?

A. So that balanced diet answer I just gave because what people consider a balanced diet, often is not is really an imbalanced one secondly, with hair fall, it could be a thyroid issue and it could be a deficiency issue so unless you look at your blood test, I really wouldn't know I personally experience a lot of hair fall when I was plant-based for nearly two and a half, three years and I kept trying to not look at it and deny that I was having deficiencies, but those deficiencies were what was triggering my blood, but because I knew that so often I knew that what was happening. So it could be both.

Q. I have type two diabetes. I've been on medication for the last seven years. Do you think this can make me more affected?

A. Yes it can, it really can. Because see this COVID virus goes and attaches to the ACE-2 inhibitors in your cells and when you're diabetic there's a higher expression of that so again we'll get technical Well, You know what, let's have a conversation. After this, either tomorrow or on Monday and I can explain this entire mechanism to you. That's why as a diabetic, you are at a higher risk of COVID-19 what really happens, let's do that.

Q. Does too much water fasting result in losing roughage and does it impact the mucosal membranes?

A. Well, it really depends because if you're doing water fasting like say in a keto-adapted phase of your body it's not going to create too much of an impact but if you're doing water fasting when you are deficient in nutrients. That is not a great idea. So, there is a chance that yes, your mucosal layer might get consumed but I personally find water fasting at least once or twice a week beneficial but I know what I eat on the other five days of the week. And that's how I can sustain water fast. There are people who've done water fasting for 15 days, 22 days. I haven't really researched how they do it but I know for sure that if you're in a keto-adapted state or if you're somebody who's doing like a carnivore diet then water fasting has lesser negative impacts it actually benefits the body more.

Q. Does pollution reduce immunity and what we should do?

A. Yes, pollution reduces immunity because a lot of the toxins are exogenous if you want a toxin talk that we did two weeks ago I speak of sources of toxins and toxins into your body, primarily because of the toxin exposure pollution can reduce your immunity so one of the things that I have done for myself that I recommend to patients at thrive is making sure your indoor pollutants are at a minimum level you can bring in a lot of air-purifying plants and keep them in your house, so the time that you spend at home that time; that you're spending sleeping at least that your breathing is clean, is possible, move out of the polluted area and do regular detox because then detox will help pull out these toxins that build up in your body so detox like I said needs a little bit planning. Again, if you want to talk about it separately, we could set up a call, and also you can watch the live show that I did two weeks ago and come back if you have more doubts. 

Q. Are you generally in favor of eating small frequent meals.

A. This is a very good question and I actually used to practice this, even for my patients that eat small frequent meals often and have a steady release of glucose in your bloodstream and have a steady adrenaline response. But what I found now that as you're learning more is that, in fact, it's better for your body to not have a constant stream of insulin and it is better to have controlled insulin because every time your body releases insulin to push the glucose into your cells and use it for energy production. So, if you're doing that, like if you're eating every two hours, your body is releasing insulin continuously and that continuous insulin release can then create the metabolic health complications that I spoke of last week in my diabetes talk. So, what we are finding and what is showing now that it's better to eat lesser meals and stay in a fasted state for longer. Again, the thing is if you're deficient, or if your insulin response like if you are hypoglycemic if you have Type One Diabetes then fasting, actually becomes dangerous because it could go into like a hypoglycemic coma. So, my recommendation is that people don't eat small frequent meals because that's what I've learned now. But, again, to plan that for any one person, I would need to first check their internal health status to figure out if that's a safe thing for them to do and then recommend that to them.

Q. When you talk of oil, which oil would you suggest to use?

A. I actually don't recommend any refined oils. Even ordinary oil is not good oil, any plant-based oils are very high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, whether they're cold pressed, or pressed extracted by unicorns living on Everest, it doesn't matter. They do not have the right ratio of fatty acid, they will trigger insulin resistance and diabetes in a human beings body, and this is universal, not just in India, this is across the globe, refined or unrefined vegetable oils trigger insulin resistance and diabetes, so I don't recommend using any oil at all.

Q. How about pregnant women, their immune system behaves very differently, how could they cope with this pandemic thing?

A. That's a very good question we actually have been discussing pregnancy and immunity internally within the team also so you know the things that are recommended, the nutrients that anybody needs is what a pregnant woman should eat, and generally what happens in pregnancy is if you haven't got underlying health issue that was there before pregnancy that it's a reflex activated during pregnancy because pregnancy is very demanding on a woman's body. For this really, I can’t give a generic answer at all it really requires is looking at your case and then recommending a more personalized diet should be.

Beat Lifestyle Diseases

This is a transcript of the Facebook Live session that was held on 11th July. The link to the talk is here.

Good to see you all. I'm glad everyone is here. My name is Mugdha Pradhan and I am the founder of Thrive Functional Nutrition Consulting. I'm a functional nutritionist myself. And I've been doing this series of FB live sessions, webinars called Own your body and this is the third one out of those and what we're going to talk about is lifestyle diseases. 

So, before we start, I have kind of outlined the flow of how this would go and so that you just know where we are when we are talking about any particular topic. So the first question is why this topic? Why am I even speaking about lifestyle diseases? Right?

So if some of you have been following me on Facebook, then you know- health is something that I'm really passionate about. We have been doing really amazing work at Thrive in reversing a whole lot of lifestyle diseases, a whole lot of chronic diseases. And, you know, the point being it's so easy to reverse things like high BP and obesity or diabetes or PCOD, it's really easy to reverse most of those diseases. 

And most people struggle with those or they become dependent on the entire pharmaceutical industry to manage those diseases. So, this is why I'm talking about this. The thing is that we only have one thing that is really our own, and that is our body on this planet. And this body is a gift. It's a gift that we get to experience our life and what happens is a lot of institutions actually try to take away our autonomy from our body?

 So that's the reason why I wanted to talk about this that, you know, ultimately a human being should have ownership of their body. They don't need to outsource that to pharmaceutical institutions or the government or doctors, who are really not there to solve that problem, but who are there to just kind of put them on medication after medication, a human being should actually be doing that. And that is the reason why we are talking about this topic. 

Now what I will talk about is what really are lifestyle diseases right. So what would you categorize as a lifestyle disease, where any disease that happens to you as a consequence of the choices you make about what you're putting into your body, any of those can be categorized as a lifestyle disease. Because every choice that you're making, while you're living a life on this planet, is going to impact your body. And if those choices are in the wrong direction, then those impacts are going to be in the wrong direction. Right? So when we speak of diabetes, for example, everybody knows diabetes is a lifestyle disease, right? But people think diabetes happens because of eating a lot of sweets and that is completely untrue. 

Diabetes doesn't happen because of eating a lot of sweet diabetes happens because of many of the root causes which we will talk about. But a lifestyle disease is a disease that you know you are not born with but has happened to you over time because of different factors that you have encountered through living your life. So maybe you have eaten a lot of inflammatory food and that's triggering a disease. 

Maybe you're exposed to a lot of toxins and that's triggering a disease. But broadly speaking, what most of us know as lifestyle diseases are diabetes, obesity basically like excess weight; weight gain itself people know is caused by poor lifestyle choices. High BP, a lot of people think that hypertension or high BP is genetic, just because everybody in your family had it, you also should be suffering from that and that is completely untrue. So high BP is completely driven by lifestyle and the choices you make.

Dysfunctional thyroid, a lot of women especially think that because their mothers had a thyroid problem and because their sisters have a thyroid problem, they also would be ending up with a thyroid problem. And that again is something that I would want to bust as a myth. Thyroid also can get impacted by the kind of lifestyle choices you're making. 

PCOD and PCOS are completely driven by lifestyle. So there is no genetic need for a woman to go through a dysfunctional reproductive system so PCOD and PCOS is another lifestyle disorder.

High BP I have already mentioned; diabetes I spoke off; excess weight I spoke off; there are many other diseases that you know one wouldn't encounter on a day to day basis in terms of why I heard about this thing happening. But there are many other diseases that also are triggered by lifestyle choices like even something like Fibromyalgia even something like IBS and IBD which is Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disorders both of these also are triggered by or wrong lifestyle choices.

We genetically are not designed to have diseases genetically, our entire body is designed to heal all the time the body wants to heal, the body wants to recover. That's, that's the design of the body. So that's what I would categorize as lifestyle diseases. Maybe the dictionary definition of a lifestyle disease might be different from what I'm seeing, but any disease that occurs out of the outcome of the lifestyle choices that you're making is a lifestyle disease in our definition. 

So now then I would like to move on to what I've written down here as diagnosed versus undiagnosed, right. And this is really the problem like I've heard so many people talk of somebody who suddenly passed away saying that, you know, this person was so healthy, how come he suddenly had a heart attack? And there is no way somebody will have a heart attack if you're healthy.

 In all likelihood, this person had an undiagnosed disorder in the body, which is what caused that heart attack, right? So diagnosed lifestyle diseases, which means that you've been given a label so your blood sugar level is high for a long time you go to the doctor, the doctor says, Oh, your blood sugar levels are high. That means you have diabetes. So you're diagnosed with diabetes. 

With high BP you might experience some symptoms, you might go to a doctor, the doctor will check your BP. Then the doctor will say, Oh, your BP is above this, you know the standard 120 by 80, so you have to take this medicine and let's suppress your BP. 

With obesity again, you check on a weighing machine or you take your measurement and then because your weight is beyond a certain BMI level now it's categorized as obesity. Likely you are, you have excess weight. So these are undiagnosed, but what I really want to focus on are the ones that go undiagnosed for a very long time. 

So for a lot of people before they develop diabetes before they develop full-blown diabetes, they have so many symptoms of insulin resistance, which is the root cause of diabetes, right? So a lot of people experience symptoms, such as for example, somebody who might have undiagnosed diabetes, they would experience frequent urination and a lot of thirsts. They would experience, you know sudden drops in energy like, at maybe 4 o'clock or something, they just have no energy. They feel very sleepy. They want tea or coffee at that time, or people with undiagnosed diabetes might experience jitteriness and shakiness just around mealtime. So if their meal is late by maybe 30 minutes or something, if they're not eating on time, they'll start getting really cranky and anxious and angry. They might get some tremors. 

The other aspect of undiagnosed diabetes is sweet cravings, right? So sweets don't cause diabetes, but because glucose is the primary source of fuel for the body. If you are diabetic, your body's ability to use glucose is impaired. So, energy production gets impacted and at that time, what happens is you will start craving for sweets right so craving for sweets, having energy drops, needing tea or coffee a lot, feeling really irritable and anxious and angry, and getting this jitteriness just around mealtimes, especially if they're a little late, excessive thirst, excessive urination. All of these are signs of undiagnosed diabetes. 

When it comes to high BP, often people don't know that sometimes they have headaches. Sometimes they have palpitations. Sometimes the feeling of anxiety itself can be triggered because of blood pressure changes and they just think that something happened there was some stressor in the environment. 

But at least diabetes we have far more significant symptoms to be decided; high BP goes undiagnosed for a really long time. When it comes to heart health diseases it's one of the biggest. Yeah so like I was saying with a heart also a lot of heart conditions actually go undiagnosed. Because with heart the thing is there are no predictable symptoms. You can't say that the pain in my chest is the heart problem. So with heart, it is very hard to predict that you could have clogged arteries, you could have blocked arteries and that is what is going to trigger a sudden episode back. 

You know, if you have drops in energy if you feel like when you're when you climbed up a few stairs and then it was very hard for you to catch your breath, something that shouldn't be that difficult. Or you instead of walking slowly, you walked a little faster than a normal pace and then you became out of breath, then that is an indication that probably your blood circulation is not as optimal as it should be. 

And we've seen in a lot of people when they come to us with high homocysteine levels, and you know, the doctors have given them a clean certificate about their heart health. And then we ask them about the symptoms that do you have trouble with when you're climbing stairs? Do you have trouble when you're walking at a faster pace, and then I guess how did you know that because we saw your homocysteine levels are high. 

So with heart, it is harder to predict than it is with diabetes. But one thing everyone needs to learn is that all of these diseases are interlinked, right? So every single metabolic dysfunction has an impact on another part of your body so you can't just be diabetic and your heart is functioning absolutely well. Or you can just have a high BP and then your heart is absolutely stellar. It is impossible for that to happen because the body is one unit. So if one thing is going wrong in your body then it's impacting another aspect of your body for sure.

Okay, that's why it becomes important to talk about these lifestyle diseases, the ones that cause what we call as metabolic dysfunction. I'm just quickly going to share my screen.

So, why is this so important from the Indian context is chronic diseases are a leading cause of death in India even before COVID came right even before Coronavirus came. Coronavirus isn't even killing that many people but even before this entire fear of Coronavirus came; India was the world leader in diabetes, it ranks third in obesity. And if you look at the threat, do you know, just the causes of death, compared to other things like global warming, bird flu, terrorism, and all of that; obesity, heart problems, and diabetes are the biggest killers.

And that is what I spoke of even and I posted on Facebook that, you know, even with people with COVID-19, the highest comorbidities are people who have an underlying health condition, whether diagnosed or undiagnosed, which explains why a lot of people say that this person was healthy and he still died of COVID.

 The root cause for that is this person probably had an undiagnosed health problem like maybe there was a very high vitamin D deficiency, or maybe that person already was insulin resistant and didn't know about it and when they contracted the virus, things just went So then it resulted in a fatality.

So, this is last year's data India makes 77 million diabetics every year this number keeps going up. And I think Indians genetically are programmed to manifest diabetes more than anything else. That's why we are the world leader in diabetes. And people even if you don't know if you've not been following the COVID statistics, the biggest comorbidity for COVID-19 is with people who have insulin resistance and diabetes.  The biggest right so, the chance of you surviving COVID-19 if you have poor blood sugar management and very high levels of diabetes just becomes higher, which is why it's important that you understand that you first have to fix your internal health dysfunctions, and only then will you be able to deal with any kind of immune system attack that comes from different pathogens in the environment. 

And so, chronic diseases were and still are a leading cause of death in India. India is the world leader in diabetes and ranks third in obesity, we have to do something about it.  We have to take control of our own health. And I mean even before COVID this was the projection right that the disease burden was going to cost India $6.2 trillion by 2030. Now with COVID, it's even become worse.

So this is why it's important for us to talk about this. And we spoke of what undiagnosed diabetes will look; as we spoke of what undiagnosed high BP might feel like; we spoke of what undiagnosed heart conditions might feel like obesity rarely goes undiagnosed because it's very easy for you to see. It's a very visual phenomena right to gain weight. You can see on a weighing scale that you gain weight. If you are gaining excess fat around your midsection, your pants are not going to fit you. They are going to be tighter. You have to open up your belt a couple of notches. So obesity, it's not that hidden as much as the other ones are. 

But when all of them are put together definitely are bigger killers than this entire COVID pandemic. And that is what we really need to focus our attention on. That is what everyone needs to be still talking about, instead of diverting our attention to sanitizing ourselves and wearing masks and going out, right?  So what are the root causes of these chronic health dysfunctions? 

So I'm just going to show you this slide and then I'm going to stop sharing my screen. The number one root cause so what we do at Thrive, is we analyze the blood reports to see what is really going on in their body. Right. So I take you through a few cases that we worked on. But let's say somebody comes to us with diabetes, what we do is we ask them to get their blood test done. And then we ask what is really creating diabetes in this person's body? Is it liver dysfunction or Is it insulin resistance?

 So, we found that in almost every case of blood test that comes to us there are always underlying deficiencies and a lot of you might be aware of vitamin D deficiency, like a lot of people get their blood test done and they know that they are deficient in vitamin D, but there are other nutrients also B12 is there, especially people who are vegan are super deficient in B12. So B12, vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, protein, there are so many nutrients that our body needs as raw material to function optimally. 

Like for your pancreas to make insulin, it needs chromium. Chromium is one of the minerals that's required in a lot of enzymatic processes. And if you're deficient in chromium, then your body's ability to make these enzymes and all of that is going to be impaired. So in our analysis, we found out that deficiencies are often one of the underlying root causes, why people get sick.

 How to find out if you're deficient or not?
It's really simple. You get your blood test done. And we’ll know, Right?  What do you do once you find a deficiency? I'll come to how to fix these lifestyle diseases but deficiencies are one of the root causes that we have found out. That creates problems for people when it comes to health. 

Then the next one that we've seen as a root cause for people's health to go downwards is toxins. So when I say toxins and when I'm putting this image of a drum with skull and crossbones on it, people don't understand that toxins are not just in a factory. So when I say toxins, even when we do our blood tests and when people come to us and we show them that there are toxins in the bloodstream, they are like where did they come from; how come so many chemicals are there in my body? 

What people don't know is the food that you eat, If it is not organic or if it is not pesticide-free, it's going to release a lot of toxins in your body. There is a particular toxin, there's a particular pesticide called glyphosate, that chemical has been used in a lot of pesticides and glyphosate remains in the soil; it enters into the animal's bloodstream also that eat that plant; that's been sprayed with glyphosate and it goes into your blood and it creates a whole lot of health problems, right from genetic mutation to even creating cancer. 

So toxins come from the food that we eat if you're eating non-organic, conventionally grown produce. Secondly, toxins can come from the household care products that you use. And this is why, in fact, the next FB live that I'm doing, I'm doing it on toxins and I'm partnering with Adrish who is doing phenomenal work in ensuring people live toxin-free lives but toxin and personal care products and household products that you use.

 So You know if you're using  Harpic in your bathroom for example, if you ever look at the ingredients that are there in Harpic, you will see that it is actually poison because you know if accidentally consumed or keep away from children is there and if accidentally consumed call up the Poison Control Center, all of these things are written because it is poison. 

So we are using these things like harpic; we’re using domex; we're using these things like bleach in our house; we're using all these antibacterial soaps. All of these are loaded with poisons and toxins and every time you apply it on your skin, every time you apply it on your face, every time it's around your body, your body's going to absorb a lot of it. These toxins come in and start messing with your cellular integrity. So we have cells in our body, right so these cells are getting damaged by toxins. A lot of toxins go and replace nutrients in your body.

 So if you're somebody who is using aluminum for cooking very often right, what will happen is that aluminium will leach into your food and it will go and replace zinc in your cells. Now zinc is a nutrient that is essential for again a lot of cellular functions. But if aluminium is going in and sitting there, then zinc has no place in your cell and then you're going to become zinc deficient again then you're going to present with some or the other lifestyle disease. 

The same thing happens with you know, your non-toxic cookware. So non-toxic cookware has so many carcinogens that get released when the heat is applied to it. So all these carcinogens now become part of your food, and then it's going into your body and it's going to create disease.

 I was speaking of bleach, a lot of bleaches, you know, your floor wipes your domex and all of that they have a lot of chlorine in them and chlorine is a halogen. It's a molecule that can compete with Iodine that is what your thyroid needs. So if you're using a lot of these highly chemical-based products then these are going to replace important nutrients in your body. 

For example, if chlorine is replacing iodine then it is going to create a thyroid dysfunction in your body because Iodine is a very important molecule that your thyroid needs to make the thyroid hormones. So that's how toxins can impact your health. They can cause genetic manipulation, they can cause cellular dysfunction, they can replace nutrients. 

And, you know, you just lose health in the process. So why do you even need something like that to clean your floor? Why do you even need such toxic products like there are so many shampoos with things even that I can't pronounce? Right, like if you look at the shampoo bottle, you'll see ingredients that look right out of a chemistry lab, and you're putting that chemistry lab on your head or on your skin on your scalp, which is the most absorptive surface and that is going to get absorbed into your body and then your liver has to work. So hard to get rid of those toxins. 

So be very careful about the products that you use; that is on your body and in your household because all of them are going to become part of this beautiful body that we have. So deficiencies, how to find out if that's happening like this toxin also we can find out from a blood test if there is a toxin overload. And the best way to fix that is to, you know, eliminate these toxins from your body and your environment completely. 

Then the third root cause that we often find in our analysis when it comes to people's health is pathogens; so pathogens need no introduction. Especially now with Corona, everyone has become aware of viruses and bacteria. We have seen so especially in cases like, you know, chronic acid reflux where people have acidity issues all the time where they've been given antacids for a long time where everything they eat triggers acidity. We found a Particular bacteria called H. pylori that is responsible for it. 

For women who have a tendency towards fibroids and cysts, we found that there's a virus called the Epstein Barr virus that creates a lot of dysfunctions, even in cases of fibromyalgia. We've seen it's the epstein barr virus that creates that health problem. So the thing with pathogens is, these exist in our environment, all the germs that we are going to be exposed to will always be a part of the environment, there is no hiding from them unless you're living in a sterile container like a lab rat, if you are going to be interacting with nature with the environment, you are going to be exposed to a whole lot of bacteria, viruses, fungi, in fact, the human microbiome. So there are studies being done on it; And what they found is like, you know, a human being is mostly 90%, viral bacterial DNA and just about 10% poor human DNA. So given that, we share our microbiome with so many other entities and other beings on this planet, it's impossible to not be exposed to a pathogen. 

The pathogen basically means a bacteria or a virus that is going to do more harm than helping your body. So why do we say we've seen diseases because of pathogens? The thing is your body, actually, your immune system is here to maintain a balance between the good guys and the bad guys. So if your immune system is compromised, because of deficiencies or because of toxins, then the pathogens can get an upper hand and they can start creating diseases. They are always there as a signaling mechanism more than anything else, the pathogens don't come to a kind of devour you, right? 

They're not there to completely eat you. We live a very symbiotic relationship with them. So every time a pathogen load goes up, it's basically an indicator to you to tell that, hey, something's wrong. So it's creating an increase of this kind of bacterial growth, please fix that issue so that the balance can be maintained again, and we've always seen so with pathogens, we don't really do anything to kind of eliminate them, right, we just bring the body back into balance. So with the food that the body needs, the nutrients that the body needs, eliminating the toxins that are feeding the pathogens, removing all the triggers for that pathogen overgrowth is how we been able to prevent a health problem arising from a pathogen, but what kind of health problems do we see from pathogens? 

The most common are these digestive issues, right? So anybody who's going through a digestive dysfunction, your IBS, IBD, acid reflux, GERD, all of those are typically caused by a pathogen overload or imbalance in the microbiome. So that is what symptomatically we know is creating an imbalance in our blood tests also from the WBC, from your CBC, we can actually make out if there's an infection in the body, right? 

Because if these guys are imbalanced and your infection markers will never go up. It's only when the pathogen overload is so high that now the body is experiencing an infection, then your WBC and your blood test markers start changing. So through your blood tests, we know if you have a pathogen overload or not. 

We've seen pathogens trigger liver dysfunction. So hepatitis, which is inflammation of the liver, we've seen pathogens trigger that so viral infections can cause a dysfunctional liver. Where else have you seen it?  I spoke of fibromyalgia right where we've seen it's the epstein barr virus that primarily is creating a lot of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. 

Otherwise, as I said, the cysts and like, you know, the PCOD, PCOS kind of manifestations that you've seen there. Also, we've seen that once the pathogen overload comes down, along with deficiencies being fixed and toxins being removed, that person's reproductive system actually starts recovering on its own. So that's when pathogens come in and create disease. Most people are very afraid of a virus right now and what everyone needs to understand as if the body is in a state of balance there is nothing that the coronavirus can do to you.

 I personally have been exposing myself to the environment because I know what state my body is in right. I get my blood test done every three months so I know that my deficiencies are all fixed like I don't have deficiencies except for the protein one which I spoke off in my last week FB live when it came to plant-based nutrition. But I know what my health is like internally and I want to then stand the test of time right so I'm saying that if I'm healthy then I should not be getting an infection. And it has been proven since March I have been out; not socially distancing with people; minimally using a mask like if a store won't let me inside without a mask only then I wear the mask but otherwise, I personally prefer not wearing a mask because I like breathing air. I have been hugging people. I've been shaking hands with people, my house help comes home. She comes from whatever area she lives in. And it's been four months and I'm still alive without getting a sniffle.

Right, so I know what it takes to have a body that stays in the balance whether or not you have the biggest pandemic of the century going around. So, that is very important to know that pathogens can harm you only if the rest of your body is in a state of imbalance. Pathogens can do nothing to you if your body is in balance, nothing will happen it will just come and go and be like Ah, this place I can do anything. Oh, it will feel like you know the party is like not happening at all. They will just go away. So pathogens can't really do anything to you unless your body's not in a state of balance. But if it is in a state of imbalance then pathogens can trigger the disease. That's what we've seen in our cases so far.

All right, the fourth root cause of people, you know, experiencing different kinds of lifestyle diseases and this is what most people know about. People don't know about deficiency; people don't know about toxins; people don't know about pathogens as much as they know about how food creates lifestyle diseases.

 And when I say food creates lifestyle diseases, I'm referring particularly to a category of food that I call us frankenfood because, like Frankenstein's monster, right frankenfood is not real food. It's food that's made using different components of real food and then it's sold to you as this is food. So for example, this orange juice comes in a tetra pack. You look at the ingredients. I don't know I don't care how much it's natural and all of that but it's mostly just orange pulp with a few flavors and colors and it gets sold to you as added Orange Juice.

The worst frankenfood I think is Maggie because Maggie is nothing like food. Like I don't even know what they used to make Maggie but Maggie just tastes good and that's why people eat it. But if you actually try to understand; what is food in this; what is going to give me nutrition in this? There is zero, there is nothing. 

And coke sodas, right? Sodas are just sugar and water and air and flavor and incense and that is it. And then people are addicted to these things. And these are frankenfoods because these things when you put them into your body, they actually create so many diseases. So we'll go more into that a little bit when I explain the purpose of food, but frankenfood is one reason why people get sick. So if you're eating, like sandwiches and burgers and pizza and especially the store-bought stuff, and then you're eating Maggie and you're drinking soda.

There is no way nobody's going to create health, you are going to end up with diabetes, you're going to end up with excess weight, you are going to end up with high BP; you're going to end up with digestive disorders. If it's not happening now; it's going to happen over time. But I can guarantee you like my master's degree in nutrition, I can vouch that if you're eating this kind of food, it is going to result in some kind of a chronic health problem. 

It might not be apparent, especially if you're younger, maybe you're somebody in your 20s or you're looking at 25 and you're doing this, your body's very resilient, right, like I said, the body's entire innate nature is to heal and repair all the time. So your body's gonna try and deal with this abuse for a very long time, but at some point is going to give up and that's when you're going to be diagnosed with a health dysfunction. 

So frankenfood, fake food for that is not really real food. That is going to definitely trigger health problems. And we have seen this in so many cases that people are eating food that is not right for the body and that is what is creating disease in their body right. So when I say when people are eating food that's not right for their body. You know we have, all of us are unique, our bodies are, we have this thing called bio-individuality, which means every person's body is unique. So what might work very well for my body might not always work for another person's body. That's why you can never generalize nutrition, you just can't. Each person reacts differently to food. 

Like there's one girl in our Thrive who is extremely allergic to sweet potatoes, who would expect an allergy to sweet potatoes, right? But she needed hospitalization when she ate sweet potatoes. So each person's body reacts to food differently. And then it's important to know what it is that your body needs. So this understanding is also what we help people with because your body has a feedback mechanism. You eat something which is going to create some kind of a feedback loop for you. So like in my case, when I eat these you know bigger beans like Rajma and  Chhole; it gives me a lot of digestive discomforts. And I try to fix it by taking enzymes. I try to fix it by doing so many things and I realized that No, this food is just not working for my body if I eat it in large quantities, smaller quantities are okay. 

So each of us has this biofeedback mechanism, right for some of us rice might make us sluggish. Right? Rice Shouldn't right? Like rice is actually absolutely okay. A lot of people avoid rice, especially diabetes people, they avoid rice because they're afraid that it will trigger the blood sugar spikes. It might not be the rice that's doing it. It might be the dietary fact that you're eating that's creating insulin resistance and that's making your diabetes worse. So understanding what is it that your body needs and which food works best for your body are what ultimately create health. Okay, so eating that frankenfood category of foods is definitely a No-No like Just a No- No, so we are still at root causes. Let me just see there's one last one. I think that I want to show you. This if I start talking about this one I never stop, but I'll keep it short. This last one right stress is one big reason why a lot of us get sick. 

So you could have zero deficiencies, you could have no toxins in your body, your immune system could be absolutely working like a stellar, super Mercedes Benz kind of level of maintaining your body's balance. You could be eating the healthiest foods, but if you're stressed, due to many things happening lately due to life events, or due to how you perceive and respond to stress or due to the relationships in your life. Maybe you're living with a lot of passive-aggressive people, maybe your boss is really an asshole. We don't know, right? So a lot of times that mental stress itself starts triggering a lot of dysfunctions in the body.

 And how that happens is; We all have this system called the adrenal system. So your adrenal glands are right there above your kidneys. And their job is entirely to continuously keep prepping your body in response to the environment that you're in. So if you're in a highly relaxed environment, like if you're getting a massage and listening to calm music, your body feels different. Versus you being in an environment where somebody is yelling at you, and like, you know, you're being bombarded with emails, and things are just going wrong and you're, there's no electricity, your Internet's not working a situation like that your body's going to be at a different state, right? It's going to be, you're going to be sweating a lot more, your heart is going to be racing a lot. So that is your body's natural response mechanism to keep you prepared for whatever stimulus is coming from the environment.

And what happens so this is an evolutionary mechanism. It will evolve when you're not ancestors were like hunter-gatherers and they were foraging for their food. And if they went to someplace and there was a tiger there, they would have to quickly decide whether to run away from the tiger or whether to kind of fight that tiger or hide, right. So the body would need to prep accordingly in response to that. So that adrenal system is an evolutionary mechanism and it's supposed to switch ON and switch OFF like our ancestors would have had opportunities to go to their caves and relax after tigers encounter and tell each ‘Hey bro, don’t go there; there’s a tiger around the lake.’ 

But in our day to day life now we don't really get that opportunity right. So what happens with us is we are facing one tiger after another. We are facing a tiger for finances; we're facing a tiger for time; we are facing a tiger for energy; now with the lockdowns and people not having househelp, everybody's doing their full day's work and then they also have to take care of the house and like their kids and their spouses and it's just never-ending, right people don't seem to be getting time off at all. So this kind of stress then starts impacting other organ systems. 

So your adrenals first go, once the adrenals go then goes to your thyroid, your thyroid and your pituitary. So the entire chain of events in your body starts creating more and more dysfunction. So we've had one case of this person, whose blood sugar levels are optimal for a while and then every time she experiences a stressor, her blood sugar levels just shoot up, right, nothing else changes, the diet is on par, she's taking all the supplements, everything is great. But the stress that comes from the external world immediately triggers a blood sugar level to go up because the body says, Oh my god, I have to be prepared. Let's release some glucose so that we have more energy to fight and deal with the stress. So that's how stress can create disease.

 We have many real-life examples where we've seen that happen even with BP, if everything else is taken under control, and then Stress is the only thing that's impacting that person we've seen BP shoot up. So stress is the fifth root cause of why people can get sick. 

I have planned on sharing a few case studies, but let's see if we have enough time for that. So I'm going to talk about this guy. His name is Amit. He came to us because he had severe acid reflux, and he had high BP, and he was on acidity medications for nearly 12 years and BP medication for 10 years. And all that we needed to do in his case was we had to find out his root cause right. So what was really happening in his case was his liver enzymes were short, his liver was completely dysfunctional. He had other things as well. He had an H pylori infection, but then as we started fixing these root causes, right. So this is what we saw in his blood test as he started fixing these root causes. His BP started stabilizing. We had to treat his acid reflux with an antibiotic with H. pylori because it was just not responding to herbs. And once the H pylori infection went away, his acidity disappeared. And he couldn't believe it that he had taken acidity medication like antacids, EPI’s twice a day for 12 years. And he didn't need to anymore, right. So that was just gone. And then his BP also started stabilizing. So he went off all his medications once we started resolving his root causes.

There was this lady who came to us with like she said, she was overweight and she wanted to lose weight. And she said she also had lethargy and depression and all of that and she was in pain like her thighs and calves would ache a lot. So what happened with her is we discovered that her thyroid was really dysfunctional. So once we started fixing her thyroid and there were reasons why they here thyroid were dysfunctional right, as we can see here. There were heavy metals. There was epstein barr virus; she had protein malnourishment; she was deficient in Iodine so there were so many things going on; multiple nutrient deficiencies. As we started fixing that she started losing weight her depression literally went away because people don't know that sometimes that feeling of low life is not worth living can just happen because your thyroid is not working with her lethargy went away; her pain miraculously disappeared at all. Because we found the root cause of what was creating her health problems. 

Now, I want to now quickly come to food because we don't have time but most of us don't understand what is really the purpose of food. We use it like you know, a social networking system we use it as a bonding system. Now with lockdown so we have so many chefs and unknown chefs that have come out from the kitchens but people use food as a lot of things other than what it is supposed to be. 

People use food to you know, get over their boredom so they will become creative with food and they will feel like food is a good entertainment mechanism. So many American sitcoms, for example, have shown that you know, when there's a breakup, then the girl goes and takes a tub of ice cream from the fridge and starts eating. And it looks really interesting and she feels better. About being misled by the media about what food is supposed to do. So we use food as an emotional backup system. But food is none of that right.

 So when you eat something, let's say you eat a mango, okay, that mango is going to get broken down first in your mouth, it's going to be digested by the enzymes that are there in your mouth, it's going to go through your stomach, it's going to get broken down even more in your stomach and it's going to go to the small intestine. And then with all the digestive juices, it's going to be broken down, absorbed and released into the rest of your body. What is going to get released into your body; glucose is going to go there and you're going to get some vitamins. You're going to get some minerals; you're going to get a lot of water; things are going to be released from the mango into your body. Now your cells and your genes in these cells are going to use this information to say oh, this is what has come to me. Can I create health with this right? 

So it is literally like, you can actually manipulate your biological software by what you put into your mouth, you can actually change your genes by whatever it is that you're eating, which is why a lot of people when they come to thrive, and after three months, they'll say that it feels like they reverse it right like, they really look like that they are 10 years younger cousin or sister. 

Because what eating the right food does when you start giving in the right information into your body when you stop sending in frankenfood when instead of a soda, you want to drink clean, filtered water instead of a sandwich you want to eat may be really well made if you're plant-based then maybe a good dal without oil. Some brown rice or maybe you're if you're somebody who's following a carnivore kind of a diet, you want to eat some clean animal protein.

 When you do that, then your food is receiving information about health saying, oh, when I eat this, I can use this molecule and create something good out of it. When you send in junk food; junk food is going to create Junk health, and I'm glad they call it junk food. They don't call it something else, but junk food will always create junk health, eating the right food that is right for your body will always create optimal health for you. So one needs to understand that food is information food is not just calories, right? So every bite you eat, everything that you put in your mouth goes in and tells your body whether you want to create health or whether you want to create disease. So that is the role of food and that is how we actually have been able to make the changes right. 

So when I speak of how to reverse any particular chronic health disease, whether it is diabetes, right, so first we find out the root causes. Why is this person diabetic? Is it insulin resistance? Is it a deficiency of chromium? Is it the stress, once we find that root cause out then we start working on resolving the root cause and food plays such an important role here. So eating the right kind of food that is right for your body is of vital importance. It is what sends vital energy into your body. 

So when I say vital energy, it's like Pranav right? So it is the energy that heals your body. Eating the right food literally creates this energetic imprint in your body that creates health. And, you know, this is what none of the pharma companies will tell you. This is what none of the mainstream like, they just won't tell you that it is so simple to take care of your health by eating the right kind of food.

 In fact, I actually don't know if this will work here. So this is what this drug can do right the screen size might be too small for you to see. But this is just an example of an analysis. So we had so many red’s in this person's report. And after like three months, most of the reds got fixed and they became either blue or green. So they did a couple of things. They were still scope for improvement. The rest of them all got fixed. Right? 

So this is actually hard evidence data from somebody's blood test showing that just changing what this person was eating and figuring out what this person needed to eat actually brought about a change in their internal health. So why and how do we get misled by food? Okay, this I want everyone to see. Is my screen visible?

Yeah. Okay. So this is the report that I was talking of. I thought my screen was shared. It wasn't so this is the report where you can see there was a change in their blood test. I quickly want to show you how and why we get misled about food.

So, what an ad like this does is; somewhere they deeply program you into believing that if you're hungry for having an energy crash, a bar of chocolate is the right thing to eat. We have treated so many diabetes people who have come to us and you know they say they carry candies and chocolates in their purses or keep them near their bed at night because if they have hypoglycemic episodes, they just want to make sure they get sugar. It's the worst thing to do for your body to eat something like this when you're lower energy and show you one more, Okay, so this is another ad and what happens is you know now you might be laughing when I'm showing you these things.

Fully active family. Very, very happy. The family that you want to be like; Everybody is exercising. And then she is serving maggie to her kids. Firstly they are eating without brushing their teeth and then eating dirty things like Maggie and calling it like healthy food. So this is how most of us get misled about food. We watch these ads subconsciously and we get programmed into believing that this thing is a healthy choice. 

I have spoken to so many people who say, oats maggie it's healthy or atta noodles; Patanjali atta noodles; it’s healthy, right? So people get misled about what is actually healthy food because of this kind of media managed propaganda, right? So we don't even know what is the right kind of food for us to eat and we eat this stuff because we think we are eating healthy because somebody has been advertising it like that. And that's what's being on our mind. And it leads to disease and then you're left wondering; But I was eating very healthy food, how come I got a disease, right? So this is one way in which disease can be created. 

So how to reverse? Always first figure out what is going on in your body. Blood tests are the easiest way to do that, then work on the root causes. And the root cause often tells you what you need to do whether you need to change your eating habits, whether you need to, like bring in some supplements, if you're deficient in vitamin D, or whether you need to, you know, get rid of toxins that have been built up in your body that the root cause analysis will always tell you. So once you find that out, just start working on them. Right. So that is how you reverse any chronic disease. And it's nothing to be afraid of, because you can like we have done this analysis for three months with a lot of people. So that's what I just wanted to talk about. 

Now I’ll take the questions that are there in chat.

Q.Does frequent consumption of medicine destroy the gut microbiome? 

A. Yes, it does, especially antibiotics. They're like the worst thing you can do to your gut microbiome, sometimes you need them because you could have had a surgery or you could have had an infection that is really severe. And then you need an antibiotic in that case, but they do destroy your gut microbiome. So if you're consuming medicines a lot that not only destroys a gut microbiome, it also impacts your liver function. So then it becomes important to start working on reversing that.

Q. Could you tell us foods to reduce hypothyroid?

A. So we need to first find out what is causing the hypothyroidism right, so is it? Is it due to deficiencies? Is it due to toxins because if it's any of that, then just changing the food is not going to help with the hypothyroid issue. So with thyroid, it's always best to get blood tests done and find out what is really creating that. 

Q.Can taking painkillers for periods cause problems?

A. The first thing you need to find out what's creating the pain because periods are not supposed to be painful. If there is pain then it's usually a magnesium deficiency or something else that's happening that's creating so much pain in the body. Periods generally, you know, there is slight discomfort but you're not supposed to experience so much pain that you will need a painkiller. If you're taking a painkiller Yes, of course, it's going to create problems because you know, it goes to the liver for having to process and then there are other compounds that come with it. There are other things that are there in medication that clearly are not good for your health. So always first find out what is the root cause for that pain and then figure out what you can do to reverse that.

Q. A silly question but what about dark chocolate? I have heard many times it's good for health and also for diabetic people. Is there any truth to it?

A. So the thing with chocolate is it usually has sugar and dairy both and both of these are not something that I would advise people to have. Chocolate by itself if you don't have a BP issue it is okay. Because if you do have BP problems and chocolate has caffeine and theobromine, two compounds that can increase BP and there is no evidence to support that dark chocolate is good for diabetic people at all. What is good for diabetic people is finding out what is creating their diabetes and reversing that then you will not be a diabetic person and then maybe you can enjoy dark chocolate without dairy and sugar; you can make with cacao nibs or something like that. But there is no evidence to support the statement that dark chocolate is good for diabetic patients. Yes, chocolate has antioxidants. But you always look at food as a net positive, right? So if all the negatives in that food are making it so bad for your body that whatever one thing that food is going to give to you is not a good thing, then I would consider the food net negative. And the chocolate really becomes specific to each person's health condition because if you have a predisposition towards BP, then that will create health problems. 

Q.If BP is normal due to medication we're taking how does it become dangerous as Corona perspective is associated?

A. With medication what you're doing is really suppressing your BP you're not curing your high BP problem. Every pharmaceutical medicine is only suppressing in homeopathy or Ayurveda at least there is a root cause kind of resolution, right? So it also looks at root causes. But most allopathic medicines only suppress the symptoms. So, whatever is triggering your high BP is still a health problem. And then with that high BP, if you do get exposed to the virus and then you know, your body's not able to deal with it, then it becomes a difficult case, right? So always find out what is triggering the BP so that you can get off a BP medication.  If BP is normal due to medication, it is just a suppressed case like you know, there's too much noise outside so you close the windows, so it feels like there is no noise but the minute you open the window, again, all that noise is going to come it's like that. 

Q.How to reverse pre diabetic condition ?

A. That's really easy. I think I can ping you or if you could just send us your number. We'll help you with that. But pre-diabetic is like it is just a diet we don't even have to put too much effort into. We just look for the root causes. If it is insulin resistance, then that insulin resistance may reverse with the kind of a recommendation that we make with food, and it just really reverses. In fact, we have a research paper that we're publishing sometime next week because we work with so many diabetic cases. And we've actually seen a reversal of diabetes which people can't believe right now even doctors sometimes make fun of me like how you can say diabetes can be reversed, I'm like, I can say that because I have data. So we are publishing our first research paper, where we reverse diabetes in cases with our approach. 

Q. Will Himalayan salts cause Iodine deficiency? 

A.No, because that iodized salt now which we are getting in the market actually has other additives. So I recommend people not even have that salt because that iodine is not even the most absorbable form. So what we do if we see that Iodine deficiency, we recommend if the person is vegan, then we recommend seaweed and kelp, or dulse flakes, sea vegetables, basically. If the person is not a vegan then we bring in some animal sources for iodine. But switching to Himalayan salts instead of iodized salts will not cause iodine deficiency.

Q. Which food is okay for anxiety? 

A. We know that I can't answer that. But I know bananas help because bananas have tryptophan which is an amino acid that is a precursor for a neurotransmitter called serotonin, which helps you be in a state of calm. So bananas are really helpful when it comes to anxiety but always find what is the root cause of anxiety right because, in so many of our cases, we found that the people who have a lot of heavy metal toxins in their body also have anxiety as a

you know, symptoms. So always find out what is the root cause.

Q. Suggest food or diet for reversing pre diabetic?

A. I can’t do that like this, I really have to look at your blood test to see what is creating your pre-diabetes. Because we don't even know what you're eating currently, giving a diet recommendation like this on a call is close to impossible. 

Q.What can be done to find the root cause of high BP? 

A. Blood test. That is that simple. So you get the test done then Rutuja can have your number also so I can ping you. Get your blood test done. If it's for you that you're asking or if it's for somebody else, get their blood test done. And then we can figure out what's creating that high BP. 

Q.So ghee is known to have a lot of medicinal properties in ayurveda, but recent research is showing dairy and diabetes connection?

A. Yes, So we actually put an article on our blog. I'll send that link as well. I'm just taking notes of things to send. So I'll send that link about how dairy can trigger diabetes and I think Indians are predisposed to diabetes-like every blood test that is coming to us now we are seeing insulin resistance and prediabetes. With dairy what happens is very high in saturated fat. So, if you have a genetic predisposition to diabetes then there is a tendency for your food to deposit this fat into cells and it becomes something called intramyocellular fat. Then that intramyocellular fat makes glucose metabolism more difficult. So we have seen cutting out dairy, even ghee. All of that helps really early in bringing down blood sugar levels, but I'll send you the link to that article that we wrote. It's there on the Thrive website.

Q. For people who don't have diabetes and since our ancient you know, thousands of years of Indians using dairy has been known and our parents, our grandparents, they have not had issues with dairy nor have they had issues with grains like wheat. So now that this whole new research is coming up, obviously the cases are raising for diabetes and a lot of autoimmune disorders as well where people are being asked to cut off dairy completely or gluten completely. What is your take on that? So can you comment on that? 

A.Sure. So a couple of things are there right. One is See, it's not like our parents are disease-free. Like our parents' generation; Like I'm generalizing, right. I'm speaking of that generation as a whole, like my uncles and aunts and all of them. They are not disease-free, right? They're not living lives where they are actually technically what I would call disease-free. My grandparents on another hand lived pretty long lives. And, you know, they were like walking until the last maybe the last few months. Yes, they still died of degenerative disease. Others were like the body started giving up. 

But it was not the same state that it is in my parents' generation. Right. So one of the things that have changed is our environment has changed a lot. There's a higher exposure to toxins. The kind of food that my grandparents ate was very different from; still, my parents didn't have the exposure to the kind of food we eat and now our kids eat right so like KFC and McDonald's really didn't exist in our parent's generation. So our grandparents really ate more natural whole foods as a part of their everyday life. Sugar was a limited accessory thing right only in case of festivals, they would make something sweet so that in some way explains how they've led a pretty healthy rise and even ghee and always not in abundance. So if you look at Ayurveda because I have done a talk with the Ayurveda practitioner about a month ago, and she is a whole food plant-based she's a vegan. Right. So the question that was like, you know, ghee was there in Ayurveda treatment practice also. So what is the deal with that?

 And she said ghee was one of the things that you could carry with you for long distances without getting spoiled, so it was a good source of calories in that time and age where people would mostly go by foot, and you know, they didn't have the luxury of cars and all of that. So, ghee was used as a high-calorie travel companion or it was used as a solvent for like because Ayurveda was all about plant-based compounds. And a lot of plant-based compounds are alkaloids in nature, right? So it needs a fatty base to dissolve. So she said those are the two purposes like he was used and we don't live that kind of life anymore. We live extremely sedentary lives. 

And then my perspective of how much exposure to toxins has increased. The food itself has changed, right so wheat was not an indigenous grain, to begin with. In India, we had millets mostly and we had rice. Like the South was all rice; in the northeast was rice; in western-like Maharashtra we had millets and in the north and Punjab and all it was mostly corn and you know the rice there was lesser but wheat came with the British wheat was not one of our indigenous grains and even then that wheat might still have been okay but what wheat has undergone is it's gone through a lot of genetic modification because it's a very high commercial needed crop right like wheat is used in so many industries apart from food; so like even if you go to buy cashew you will have wheat coated cashew; like the roasted cashew right, we call those roasted nuts. So wheat  is a very high commercial yield crop and because it's that profitable, they don't want to leave it to the vagaries of nature that it is drought then there is no crop, right? So they've genetically modified wheat, it's become drought resistant, it's become pest-resistant, but then that way it is not something that's going to work well with our genes because You can't be in genetically modified food and expect your genes to not react to it. 

So that's why now wheat is a problem. And even if people are eating Ever wheat, I'm still seeing they have issues that are very few wheat insensitive people. And I think it's just a matter of time because something will show up because it's not just gluten and wheat. There is also gliadin which is there in wheat, which can actually cause cell ruptures and cell damage. So it is quite an inflammatory food. And that's why I've seen like, even in our protocols we take people who have wheat and dairy in the first week itself and this can experience what so you might not know what it feels like to avoid it until you avoid it completely. And then you eat it occasionally and you say, Oh, this is what happens when I eat this. But I think it's the life we're living now and the environment that's making these more troublesome for us.

Why should you know about Diabetes?

This video is a transcript of the Facebook live session that was held on 25th July. The link to talk is here.

Hello! My name is Mugdha Pradhan, I am the founder and a functional nutritionist at Thrive and what we do at Thrive is we reverse chronic diseases, and by virtue of that diabetes is something that we work with, almost every single day. 

Given the fact that India is the diabetes capital of the world, it's not even surprising that almost everyone who comes to us has something going on in terms of diabetes or insulin resistance in their body. So today's session is very important to me, and I think for everyone else who is attending. 

Initially, I just thought I'd talk about diabetes and then as I started researching about it, I discovered that there is a very huge link between COVID and diabetes. Well before we start, you know what I just want to run a quick poll. I just want to take you through the flow of the session and then I'll go through my story of what happened this morning.  Just hang on. So this is what we're doing today.

We have an hour with us, which is very little time to actually discuss everything that I want to talk about, but we'll go through the introduction; we'll talk about why we're discussing diabetes; why should you be learning about diabetes; we'll talk about Indians and the diabetes connection; how did we become the diabetes capital of the world. And I’ll speak about the root causes of diabetes, I'll speak of the cost of untreated diabetes what really happens when you don't treat diabetes; I  will also speak of the cost of living with diabetes; I will speak of the symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes and then we'll go to the COVID-19 and diabetes connection. And then we'll talk of how to reverse diabetes, okay so it's a lot. I've packed in as much as I could in one hour. I want to give you guys time for q&a as well. 

Now, I just want to run a quick poll before we start, this is not really going to happen for Instagram people who are attending it. A lot of the fun stuff is happening on the zoom and FB live, but I’ll try and make it fun for you guys also. So a quick poll before we start off.

So one is, which language would you prefer me to speak in? And the second is just with reference to diabetes itself.  How many of you have been diagnosed with diabetes?

If there is anyone on Instagram the question I'm asking is, which language, would you prefer me to speak in English or Hindi or a mix of both?  And have you been diagnosed with diabetes? Here are two questions I'm asking so you could just give your answers there in the chat and I'll try and incorporate your ideas as well. Alright, so another 10 seconds or so then we should see our results. 

A majority of you are asking for this session to be done in English. Some of you are asking for it to be in a mix of both Hindi and English which is okay. But if most of you would have told me pure Hindi then I would have been really stumped. 

And have you been diagnosed with diabetes? So, there are a few people who've been diagnosed with diabetes. So I want to end the polling and we're going to get started with our session.

I'm going to share the results, so that you guys can see.

So, this is a session flow, we're going to talk all of these things and in the end, we want to come to how to reverse diabetes because if I had started a session without helping you understand how to reverse something that's there as a reversible disease then there would be no point of the session at all.

Now here's the thing, so I'm just going to stop sharing my slides for a minute. And I'm going to look at you guys. Can you turn on your videos? I'd love to see your face. It's so much easier talking to a screen when you can see other people's faces so if you can turn on your videos. If you don't mind doing that, Please do it.

See the reason why diabetes is such a big disease is how people just think of it. You know high blood sugar;  Sugar aa gaya hai;  Mein sugar ki dawai le rahi hoon...  Those are the kind of statements, we usually hear without people really understanding the long term consequences. So Kya ho sakta hai diabetes diagnosis se, what does it mean? Does it just mean that you can't eat sweets for the rest of your life or does it have a bigger implication?

I'm going to go back to sharing the screen. So, what we have seen in our work is that diabetes as a disease has an impact on the entire body from your brain, your eyes to your skin to your kidneys to your feet. Harr jagah diabetes ka asar ho sakta hai and that is what I just want to show you in the next slide. So I'm going to go back and share my screen with you and Instagram guys I really wish I found some way of bringing my slides to you but for now I'm just sharing with the zoom in the FB live folk.

This is what I was talking about right so if you have high blood sugar levels, I'm not going to go into the technical details of how this happens because then this will be an eight-hour talk, but you could have anything from a stroke to a diabetic foot right so you could get a clot in your brain and in fact what they are seeing now is Alzheimer's. 

 Jo Alzheimer's disease hota hai jo hum sochte hai jo buddhe logo ko hota hai. Like now they are calling Alzheimer’s as Type- 3 diabetes, so the root causes which means whatever is causing diabetes in the first place can also cause a disease like Alzheimer's; so diabetes complications can affect the brain diabetes; it can result in heart attacks, diabetes can cause something called a peripheral artery disease which means the arteries that run through your legs. Those can get affected because of high blood sugar.  Also if your blood sugar levels are high for a long time then they also remain impacted.

There is something called diabetic retinopathy where your eyes and your vision start getting impacted so your retina, the retina in your eye that is responsible for a light response that can start getting damaged, and then you can develop cataract so your eyes can big-time get impacted by high diabetes levels. There is something called diabetic nephropathy which is the kidneys right and we have seen this at Thrive that people who have diabetes for a very long time get their kidneys impacted. So one is the blood sugar levels and the glucose that the kidney has to flush out all the time. Secondly, if you're taking diabetes medication, then the diabetes medication itself affects the kidney.

And then peripheral neuropathy so whatever happens in your eyes how your nerves start getting damaged. Similarly, even the nerves in your legs can start getting damaged by diabetes, there is a condition called diabetic foot where you know the wounds on your feet and they don't heal and it gets really gross. In fact, it's a very difficult condition for people who have to live with it. 

A lot of people don't know about erectile dysfunction which is triggered by diabetes. So if you've had diabetes for long, it can impact your sex life and when we go to the impact of diabetes, we'll talk about that the emotional consequences of living with diabetes but diabetes can also cause erectile dysfunction. You know it's one single label that is ‘You have diabetes.’ Aapke sugar levels high hai but uss ek label se aapke body ka kya kya asar ho sakta hai jaanna jaruri hota hai.

It's really important that you understand that the body is one unit, you know you don't have a head separately that you can take to a neurologist so you don't have a heart separately that you could take to a cardiologist, everything is in the same body, and it's in your body so if one thing is going to get affected then the rest of the body is going to be impacted by it. That's why you should be worried about diabetes, even if the COVID-19 situation was not there.

 So this is Pre-march 2020 these are all the reasons why you should be worried about diabetes, and more moving on to the next slide, which is what as an Indian as a person; who treats people in India; as a person who is working with the most number of Indians this is something that really concerns me. We'll go to the research papers here but in 2019, 30 million people were already diagnosed with diabetes and I'm not even talking off undiagnosed diabetes. I'm actually talking about people who received a diabetes diagnosis, there were 30 million people in 2019 with a diabetes diagnosis, which means all the conditions that I mentioned before, could likely happen in their body.

India has the highest number of diabetes than in any country in the world. If you look at any country, even the US, even the number of diabetes diagnoses we have in India is leading in that it's a shameful thing to be leading in. But we are the world leaders when it comes to diabetes, and we will quickly go to some papers that tell us why that is happening like why is it that Indians are more predisposed to diabetes right.

Why is it that Indians are more susceptible to diabetes right? What really is triggering it? Is it that our eating habits? 

 Not really because if you look at the US; if you look at other countries, there's an equal amount of junk food being eaten. McDonald's came to the US before it came to India. KFC came there with fried food. I mean you know all these processed foods first came over there before it came to our country. So why is it that despite us having more home cooking and more eating at home kind of practice? Why do we still come up as the diabetes capital of the world?

So again you Instagram guys are going to miss out on this but here is a research paper that talks of this one of the reasons are the glycemic load, as in the how our body relates to sugar is also largely dependent with the muscle mass and Indians by genes; whatever has happened to us genetically over years by the way our bodies are structured we are smaller in stature, we don't have the kind of muscle mass than Caucasians do. Now we are adapting to a Western so you're eating the kind of food the Caucasians do without really our genes changing too much and then that metabolic load is what makes it worse for us and that's one of the reasons why Indians are leading the world in terms of diabetes.

And then there’s another paper that's talking of Asian Indians with pre diabetes they have similar skeletal muscle. We'll go to this one and a little more in detail when we talk of undiagnosed diabetes.

The third reason why India is leading in terms of diabetes numbers is we have a lot of undiagnosed diabetes cases. So, diagnose diabetes when you visit the doctor and they do the blood tests out there and then they tell you that your blood sugar levels are high and you have diabetes right so that is how diabetes gets diagnosed. 

Now, a lot of people suffer from the symptoms of diabetes without going for those tests and they don't even know that they might actually be having diabetes and that is one reason why we are becoming the diabetes capital so you people suffer from diabetes symptoms for very long they don't know those can be reversed; they don't know those can be modified. And then suddenly one day when the symptoms become really bad or they have some other health issue they go to the doctor. And, you know, the doctor runs these tests and then they say oh you have diabetes and by now the diabetes levels have become really high. So one of the reasons is why India is the diabetes capital of the world because of the undiagnosed uncontrolled diabetes that's going on. 

I did have one more research paper which was showing how our skeletal muscle mass is lower than Caucasians. I don't think that windows open here but I will send that in the follow-up email. This is one reason why Indians have a higher susceptibility; it's to do with our genes; it's to do with our body type; it's to do with our metabolic type. And the fact that we are now eating the kind of food that is not really suited to this body type and that's triggering a metabolic problem and creating diabetes.

Alright, so I'm going back to my slides so that I can actually interact with you guys and do q&a.

So then the question that one must ask is what really triggers diabetes right so I spoke of how India is the diabetes capital of the world; I spoke of the different things that diabetes can trigger; I spoke of how diabetes complications itself can lead to other health problems but the question then that I love answering and we always ask at Thrive is why did somebody get diabetes? What is the root cause?  So diabetes is just a label like telling you to have high blood sugar levels. What is really triggering for your blood sugar levels to have optimal is a question to ask. And that's what I will come into next.

How many of you have heard of the word insulin in connection with diabetes?

The thing about insulin is it's largely the reason why people get diabetes and we'll go into that quickly right now, what is the correlation between insulin and diabetes. So I'm just going to play a quick video that will make it easier for me to explain the connection between insulin and diabetes.

The pancreas located behind the stomach is involved in the body's ability to use glucose. Within the pancreas, tiny structures called Islets of Langerhans secrete hormones into the blood. These islands are composed of several cell types one cell type beta cells release insulin after every meal. Insulin along with glucose passes into the bloodstream and travels throughout the entire body.

Insulin binds to specific receptors located on cells, the binding prompts the opening of glucose gates allowing glucose to enter the cell. Diabetes is a disease in which the body has trouble using glucose. In type one diabetes, the beta cells are no longer able to produce insulin.

In type two diabetes insulin is produced and binds with the cell's receptors. However, when insulin binds with the receptor, the glucose gates fail to open, preventing the entry of glucose into the cell.

That is a short video that explains how the pancreas actually creates insulin and how insulin takes so glucose into cells. So those of you on Instagram, basically pancreas is the organ that's there right under the liver and that's the one that's making this hormone called insulin. So insulin is what opens up our cells' gates, so that when glucose is released from the food that we eat. This glucose can go and So when your doctor says your diabetes is high basically means you're measuring the amount of glucose that is there in your bloodstream. 

And how does your blood sugar level go up? And this diagram explains it pretty well so we just saw what the pancreas does; the pancreas releases insulin, the insulin goes and attaches to an insulin receptor. Once the insulin receptor opens up to insulin the insulin triggers the glucose receptors to open glucose goes and enters your cell. When glucose enters your cell, then the cells can use that glucose to make energy and to do everything it's supposed to do. 

Now, if you have type two diabetes, we'll go to type one later but I'll just take you to type two diabetes so if you have type two diabetes, which is what most of the people in India develop it is type two diabetes lifestyle-related diabetes. The pancreas will release insulin, the insulin goes to the insulin receptor, but the insulin receptor does not open up to insulin right so there is something called insulin resistance so the gate itself closes. So insulin comes to the gate but the gate is closed and the gate is not opening, and when the gate is not opening, then insulin can go inside the cell and ask the cell to open up to glucose, so insulin doesn't go inside the cell, then the glucose system floating outside only and all the glucose that is floating outside now is there in your bloodstream.

 So this is what gets measured by all those Accu-chek, all those glucometers or your blood samples whatever they take to test your blood sugar levels, this floating glucose is what is getting measured in those tests. And the higher the floating glucose, the higher is your blood sugar levels, and this floating glucose protein sugar in your blood is really what causes all the damage that is associated with diabetes, all the risks of diabetes;  the kidney problem; the eye problems; the Alzheimer kind of situation; the diabetic foot, all of those problems are caused by this extra glucose floating around including weight gain.

You don't become diabetic because you're overweight, you actually gain weight because of diabetes and the root cause of that is insulin resistance so if you have extra glucose floating around in your bloodstream; if too much of this glucose is there in your body. Then the body knows it is dangerous and it has to convert it into fat to store it.

 Just glucose floating on its own can cause a lot of damage to your internal organs so the body starts converting this glucose into fat and it starts storing up. Sometimes it stores it; as if you know the body things or there's too much glucose that can be stored for future energy. It's a survival mechanism; it's an adaptation that the body has developed from our ancestral times.

 So, from one perspective it's good that your body can convert glucose and store it as fat; so in periods of starvation, you can actually always have energy sources from your body itself you don't need to eat food all the time. But if you're eating a lot of food, and you have insulin resistance and glucose is not entering your bloodstream and that is why glucose gets stored in as fat, that is what creates excess weight.

So this is the relationship between insulin and diabetes. So, anytime somebody has diabetes the root cause always is insulin not being used properly so in type two lifestyle-related diabetes it's this insulin resistance that we see that you're seeing here in this image.

 In Type-1 Diabetes what really happens is the beta cells of the pancreas are not able to produce enough insulin, if you see this in the diagram here the cells itself are damaged. So when they don't produce enough insulin. You might eat food, glucose might be released but then insulin is not going to those insulin receptors to open it up, and then because that's not happening your glucose can't enter your bloodstream, and then again you have high blood sugar levels. 

So these are the two ways in which insulin, either too less of your insulin, or insulin not being able to enter into your cells or the insulin resistant itself can start triggering diabetes in the human body.

The goal is always to get a person from this place back to a healthy place and this can happen. We've seen this happen in so many cases which I will show you later.

Moving on to the next.

This is something that I wanted to cover and I wanted to talk about because often, people think that once they've been given a diagnosis by conventional medicine or by their doctors, they will have to live with it. Not many people know that a lot of these lifestyle diseases are reversible including high BP, people think I have been diagnosed with BP now I have to take medications for a lifetime. Similarly for thyroid and that's what even people think about diabetes.

They think that once you've been given a diabetes diagnosis you now have to take medications and that is how I need to survive now. Okay. A lot of people think that if they take Metformin or Galvus or whatever then they can eat sweets in the evening the blood sugar won't rise but that is a very wrong approach. You're not taking the medicine so that you can eat sugar. You are being given medicine so that your sugar levels are suppressed artificially without finding out what is triggering diabetes in the first place.

But assuming you still want to do that you want to survive in the same manner where you want to eat sweets and then take medication, so the average monthly expense of somebody living with diabetes can go from 3000 to 8000. I'll tell you how right. So it's not just the cost of the medicines, you will need to consult your doctor at least once a month, if not twice so consultations itself can go to about 700 rupees if it's not a very expensive doctor, second, the doctor will want to look at your blood sugar levels then you have to do lab test topic at least of sugar, that is hbA1c and blood sugar test occurring is monthly around 500, and then medicines you take like Glycomet, Metformin other if you're dependent on insulin the insulin injections.

 Generally, diabetes doesn't come alone. So diabetes comes with high BP diabetes comes with other problems. So, all of this together, usually they come up to around 6000 rupees so the lowest is 3000 highest the cost of living with diabetes on a monthly basis can go up to 8000 rupees. Plus, you will end up with other health complications right so your kidneys at some point will start getting impacted. Your eyes will start getting impacted and all the health complications we spoke about in the first slide, all of those will happen in due course of time. There is no avoiding them to reverse diabetes so they will be the added cost of those health complications.

 We've had patients who come to us, who are at a pre dialysis state or they're already undergoing dialysis, and if we ask them where it all began. How did it begin often it either began with high BP medication or began with diabetes medication? So, I am not scaremongering or joking when I say that the cost of living like diabetes just keeps getting incremental and incremental. 

Sometimes, over time to calculate like let's say you got diagnosed with diabetes when you were maybe 40. By the time you're 65, you would have spent nearly eight lakhs on your diabetes, I am not kidding about this.

Plus the impact on emotional health. Everybody's eating sweet in your family and you can't eat it so you feel really miserable about yourself. People are celebrating occasions and then you have to control that like you just think sweet is the root cause of diabetes so you will not eat sweet and you feel bad. 

The emotional toll of somebody not being able to eat mangoes in mango season because they have diabetes. I know what that feels like right now the impact on emotional health, when you have diabetes when you can't eat your favorite foods, then you can't socially interact now the social distancing social interaction is gone, but even then.

 Plus, if you have diabetes triggered health complications like erectile dysfunction, or frequent urinary tract infections in women or vaginal infections.You know your physical intimacy with your partner gets impacted with time and people underestimate the importance of physical intimacy, but that also can impact emotional health.

 So, this cost of diabetes impact on emotional health; I can put it in tangible numbers I can't say that oh this is like 3000 rupees per month, I can't but the person who's suffering that the person was feeling really low about life the person who's going through that will know what that cost is so it is just incremental. Now this is the cost of living with diagnosed diabetes. If you go through life with undiagnosed diabetes we'll come to the cost of that especially in the COVID-19 situation. It is the one cost people are paying for undiagnosed diabetes.

Alright, moving on to the next slide.

I'll quickly talk of the symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes because a lot of people like when I send them the email about the session or when I WhatsApp them about this session, people are asking questions about, okay, I have not done my blood test and I'm scared to go to the lab right now. Given that COVID is around, I would think labs are actually safer than your grocery stores because labs are sterilized all the time but even then if you're afraid of going to the lab.

How could you find out that maybe you're having some level of diabetes going on in your body right now, like insulin resistance at the beginning of diabetes what we call pre-diabetes. Now, this chart quickly shows you some of the symptoms.

 One is, you might always feel hungry like you would have eaten a meal and you still want to eat. And the reason why that's happening is that you've eaten a meal your body has broken that down to glucose, but that glucose is unable to enter your cells for energy so your body is sending a signal to your brain that oh I haven't gotten food yet, please feed me, and then you're always feeling hungry. 

Secondly, you might always feel thirsty. Now, again, this gets technical, but if you have excess glucose floating around in your bloodstream your kidney has to keep dumping that out because it's a safety mechanism that your body has which, by virtue of which you will urinate a lot. So, because urinating a lot; you will also end up feeling thirsty all the time. 

Dizziness especially if you miss a meal or if you're woken up late and you had your breakfast a little later, dizziness is another symptom of undiagnosed diabetes especially early morning dizziness. Unexplained weight loss that usually happens in type one diabetes, it doesn't happen in type two we are focusing on type two right now. Unexplained weight gain is a symptom of type two diabetes, where you know you're generally just gaining one to two kgs three kgs for months even cutting down on food but is still gaining weight.

Frequent urination we spoke off. Numb and tingling hands and feet. Remember the early slide the first slide I showed you about the complications of diabetes how your nerves in your extremities can get damaged. So, when your nerves damage due to excess glucose. Then you might have tingling and numbness in your hands and feet so that's one of the symptoms of, but it's not an early symptom, if you go undiagnosed for very long, then you start experiencing tingling and numbness in hands and feet.

Candida is basically the vaginal infection that I spoke off so if you have very high blood sugar levels. That's something that bacteria love to feed on and then typically urinary tract infections and Candida kind of vaginal infections do happen if you have high blood sugar levels that have not been diagnosed.  I can't remember where I read this, I just recollected it but diabetes is like in the Greeks was a disease of the rich. People with diabetes, I think that's also where the root diabetes comes from but apparently the people who have diabetes when they urinate their urine will be so high in sugars and glucose that there will be ants in that zone. It's a fun fact you can google it I can't remember where I read it.

 I don't even know how it is, but maybe it is skin problems, slow healing because like nerves are getting damaged right so even healing and everything slows down sexual health problems; we spoke off blurry vision because your retina and the nerves in your eyes are getting damaged so you start getting the blurry vision, and then irritation so this is something that a lot of people don't know and it's one of the earliest symptoms of insulin resistance, that if you miss a meal. 

If you don't get your food in time, you might suddenly become like you know that movie bhool bhulaiya.. There was this monjolika character from a normal nice person you might suddenly become a monjolika kind of a person who's like getting annoyed and angry and irritable and cranky because glucose is the primary source of fuel for your brain, it's what your brain uses for energy.

And now, if your body's glucose depleted if there's not enough insulin if your cells are not getting energy then all the signals are going to your brain right so it just causes irritation that is not getting what I need and then that kind of crankiness if you miss a meal of your food gets delayed by 15-20 minutes that's typically a very sure sign off insulin resistance. 

And then of course elevated blood sugar levels. I mean, like for that you would have to get a test done but that's a definite sign of your sugar levels being elevated and of you having insulin resistance and prediabetes. Feeling tired all the time can also be because of insulin resistance because maybe eating a lot of food as I said, but that glucose is not going into yourself so your body's feeling fatigued all the time. So feeling tired is a sign of insulin resistance as well. 

Apart from that, what we have noticed in our work people who have excessive cravings for sweets is one of the symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes.

How many of them here have an excessive craving for sweets, especially after you finish your meal and then after that, you want to eat something sweet? You could do a show of hands I think that option is there you could do yes or no or something like that but how many of you even on Instagram whoever is watching. How many of you like after a meal you just feel the need to have something sweet? Like Kuch toh meetha khana hai ? 

So that is also a symptom of insulin resistance and diabetes because again like I said you ate food and your body's trying to digest that and all the glucose is released, but the glucose is not going into your cells, where your body's going to use it for making energy so the feedback that the system gets us to get something sweet and maybe that will quickly give me energy. So that is one reason why you could have sweet cravings insulin resistance could be the root cause of it. So that's symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes for those of you who have questions around this. A lot of people ask me this like how do I know if I have diabetes or not if I've not done my blood tests. I hope this makes it clear.

Okay now we go to the one thing that I wanted to talk about so I've just shared a few screenshots and then I take you to those research articles, but this is what is really scaring me and this is what you know I was telling you when I started the session that I was researching this particularly like what is really happening with COVID-19 and diabetes. Why are more people getting impacted, more people who had diabetes getting impacted by it like if you saw the slide. 

Nearly 40% of people who died with COVID-19 had diabetes right and it's interesting this morning my househelp came and she met me after many days because Pune went through its six lockdowns, and she was telling me that her husband's cousin brother who is much younger than her husband. He died of Corona, so I said how is that even possible he was young right he should have recovered and she's like Yes, he was young; he was in his 30's; he was healthy but still died. She took me through like his entire symptoms and what happened then it was indeed Corona and they did a test and it came positive and then he had all of that like the lung blood clots and in throwing up blood.

But I was not willing to accept that somebody that young could have just died without any underlying root causes because that's the data that we're seeing that Healthy People are recovering. It's like a 99.9% recovery rate. So as I started asking her more; I asked her Was he a little overweight? So she was like yes from childhood he was fat. Then I started asking if the blood sugar levels were high or not?  Then she said Yes and I was like Bingo! This is it. So whether you're young or old, it doesn't matter when it comes to COVID-19.

Right what we are seeing is, there are a few diseases underlying dysfunctions then age doesn't matter it's indiscriminate but if you have these conditions then COVID-19 becomes a really high-risk viral infection for you otherwise it's just like any other virus. So let me just take you to why that is happening.

Alright so here is the first one  COVID-19 and people with diabetes are understanding the reasons for worse outcomes. And this just came like two-three days ago this Lancet paper. So, what is happening here is with high levels of glucose.

So they're looking at not just Wuhan they're looking at Britain; they're looking at Wuhan; they're looking at India and what they're seeing is having diabetes becomes a very high-risk factor so look at this a greater risk for viral infection was observed in people with diabetes, and not just COVID; they are saying they've looked at data even with SARS and MERS and all the other respiratory infections that have happened in the past. And this is what they're seeing so there's another paper which says about why COVID-19 killing US people with diabetes at a much alarming rate.

Again, as always with all my live sessions I will send all the links that are there in the email after this session.

Basically what these articles and these research papers are saying is that because of the already elevated blood sugar levels which impact, which creates tissue inflammation. And because of the medications that people are taking. So there are a lot of cofactors that are happening along with diabetes. Look at this is an Indian paper, the risk of a fatal outcome from COVID-19 is up to 50% higher in people with diabetes right. So here it doesn't matter whether you've been diagnosed with diabetes or not, whether you're on diabetes medication or not, none of that matters. If you have elevated blood sugar levels, then your risk of a fatal outcome from COVID-19 becomes much higher and that is really dangerous. 

At first for us, we were just treating diabetes as a lifestyle disease, people were coming to us and they just wanted to reverse that and you know they wanted to lose weight and they wanted to feel more energetic and healthier because of all that are great health goals. I mean, I wouldn't dismiss any of those right now. Given that there indeed is a real virus that's come whether it's being made in a lab from Wuhan. 

And whether it's something that's mutated in the last four months, I don't know I haven't studied that in that much detail but I have come to the conclusion that is definitely a virus that exists that spreads very quickly that is not fatal to nearly 99.99% of the population, but if you have diabetes, then it can be something that can get pretty messy for you so you might still recover from it but it can get really serious for you. 

They've gone through a lot of different variables, they have gone through gender, they've gone through races, they've looked at Black, Asians, British, Caucasian they've looked at all of that and they've come to the hypothesis that longer duration of diabetes prevalence of diabetes complications are then people who are older than 65 that's why most people who are older, have more fatal outcomes, but diabetes is definite co-morbidity from COVID-19. 

Alright, so I don't mean to scare you. It's just the data that I have understood from research. So, I have to share it with people. And that is why I'm sharing this with you so if you have any of the symptoms we've discussed and you've not been diagnosed yet or if you want to just get your blood tests done and find out, please find out the risk of diabetes. India is the diabetes capital of the world, we have it in our genes itself from our parents and our grandparents over time.

We eat very differently, even in lockdown most of them have ordered in from restaurants rather than cooking. And in restaurant foods, it has so much oil and so many things that actually create health problems right so I wouldn't be surprised if I see like already in Thrive when we get blood reports, nearly 95% has insulin resistance or diabetes already started. The insulin resistance, the videos and all that we saw earlier. All of those are already there and people who come to Thrive. So, please, given that COVID-19 is now spreading and lockdowns have been removed we will all of us will be exposed to it at some point of time or the other, make sure you get your risk of diabetes lowered as soon as you can.

Okay, so how do you reverse one is like learning about this and then feeling a little anxious, that oh my god what happens if I have diabetes does that mean a surefire fatal outcome for me. No, that's not really the agenda of doing this talk, it's about sharing knowledge, it's about helping you learn what you can do to own your body, and it is very easy to reverse diabetes so I'm just quickly going to show you. People who reverse their diabetes. 

I want to quickly show you the number of people who have successfully reversed diabetes. And then I'll actually take you through real numbers where you can see what's changed. We've just hidden their names, which means they've all agreed to share their pictures for this. But so many people have come to us with diabetes or pre-diabetic symptoms and or in the blood test we've seen those levels and we've had them get off their medication and have them actually reverse their diabetes so let me just take you to the data.

Let's just wait for this document to load. So what I'm doing on my screen I'm sharing a research paper that we are going to publish soon. This research paper has data from the Thrive tribe of people who come to us and we actually have everybody's before after results right so we have their before blood test we have their after breakfast and I'll also show you which other blood tests that someone needs to do. If you want to check for diabetes levels.

So, the people on Instagram are going to miss this but what we look at when we look for somebody whose risk of diabetes is fasting and postprandial So, before and after blood sugar levels, then we look for hbA1c. And then we look for what we call as fasting and postprandial so before fasting and after a meal, insulin levels also because just looking at your blood sugar levels is never enough, you need to also look at your insulin resistance and your insulin level.

So I am going back to the data. We've hidden their names because we don't want that to be public but we've kept their ages for you to see, you know, diabetes is quite indiscriminately when it comes. So here, you're looking at the fasting blood glucose level you're looking at the postprandial and so this is data after three months. 

The red one is like the worst when they come to us it's in a really bad state and when they end the program because we see a lot of improvement. So, we have fasting blood glucose; we have postprandial blood glucose levels. Then we have the hbA1c, and then we have fasting serum insulin and postprandial serum insulin if you look at it. In almost all, I think in every single case, we have seen an improvement from the before and after. See, not all of them are within optimal ranges in three months, sometimes if the diabetes is chronic or if they are on medications for diabetes right then the first month and a half, we'll start working on lifestyle changes, dietary changes and then we'll slowly reduce the medication. So, in some cases when we stop medication blood sugar begins to rise but gradually it reduces.

 You can see in some cases hbAc decreases from 9.7 to 7.6  and  7.2 to 6.3. 265 blood sugar levels go to 218. So, if you see, it shows your blood sugar fasting in the postprandial but what I am more interested in is the serum insulin level because the more sensitive your body becomes to insulin, the better your blood sugar control will be over time so that is what we track a lot. And if you look at the numbers they're pretty amazing from double-digit numbers they go into single-digit numbers; from triple-digit numbers they go into double-digit numbers sometimes back into single-digit numbers.

So this is what just finding the root cause for your insulin resistance and working on it actively can do it can actually start reversing diabetes so you're no longer at risk for all the other lifestyle diseases like a kidney dysfunction and so many other things that we spoke off, plus your risk of COVID-19; death by COVID, really goes down.  Because you will actually lose weight; your BP medications also will stop; so this is what we do and it is really possible to make this happen. 

How to do this?  It is primarily through lifestyle changes. So you have to find out what's really triggering insulin resistance. Maybe you're eating some food that is inflammatory for you right so that could be triggering it. Maybe you're eating a lot of refined oils and those are the ones triggering insulin resistance, maybe you're deficient in something like chromium; chromium is a mineral that your body needs to make insulin so maybe you're deficient in chromium and that's why insulin is not being produced.

So that is what I wanted to talk about I am now, keeping it open to questions in case any of you have your blood tests or you want to reach out to us and ask about your own personal risk of diabetes after listening to what I've said, so you can contact me.  And now I’ll be taking the questions. Let’s go one by one. 

Q.  Most of the symptoms seem general in nature, if we have a few of them does that mean we are at risk? 

A. See, basically, a body without disease will be symptom-free. So if you're having some symptoms it's your body's mechanism it's your feedback mechanism that your body is telling you. Hey, I'm showing you this. Something is wrong internally like you know; you're driving your car and if the suspension is broken, you're going to hear noises right or maybe the steering wheel is really tight and you can't turn enough or maybe the brakes as you know have become. I don't know what happens to brakes but something's happening. So your car will keep giving you different feedback mechanisms right to tell you, something's not right or somebody something the fuel itself might be low and you might see that indicator go down. So if you're experiencing any of the symptoms I've mentioned here, then your body's definitely trying to give you feedback saying something's wrong look at it and fix it. Does that mean you have diabetes?  Not always because sometimes you could feel lethargic because of a thyroid gland not functioning but also, but you should be symptom-free through the day; you shouldn't be needing, for example, if you need tea or coffee to wake up and get through the day or, you know, if you're feeling excessively thirsty then something's wrong for sure you may be your electrolyte balances off, but they are not general symptoms mood. They are symptoms of a specific disease.

Q. What’s the time period between before and after the test?

 A. These ones we do after three months I mean, for every person who comes to us sometimes now in the lockdown, they get delayed but this data is from earlier patients. It's much before February also. So all of these are three months.

Q. Which Muscle building exercises are recommended for weak back to individuals?

A. I am not qualified to answer that question. I am a nutritionist, and I work with lifestyle diseases. So, in terms of workouts and all of that I am not the best person to answer that question you could follow a feed on Instagram, is this gentleman his handle is movement mechanic in. You could follow him and he'll help you with your exercises.

Q.What do you recommend on eating fruits?

A. I recommend all fruits. There are a lot of people who recommend keto diets for diabetics. I am not of that philosophy I have seen as reversing diabetes with fruits. So, we recommend all fruits, but that is given seeing the underlying assumption that you're taking care of the other things that you should not be doing so if we find out that you have insulin resistance and then you're eating a very high-fat diet along with fruits, then that's going to create a problem for sure. 

Q. Any special care to be taken by type one diabetics?

A. We work with type one diabetics also and what we have been able to do with a type one diabetics is we've been able to reduce their need for insulin. So there was a lady who was taking 36 units of insulin. We actually brought her insulin requirement to 20 units within three months. So the care to be taken with type one diabetics is you have to make sure that you know your insulin and the glucose, those levels are in sync it's better if type ones actually use a continuous glucose monitor because that helps you really understand what's happening with your glucose levels through the day. 

Q. Can you also share some of the best practices that we should follow to reduce the risk of diabetes?

A. Yes for sure. So, I have seen in our work what has really worked for a lot of diabetics is making sure that they eat the right kind of food so completely avoiding processed food right like just no processed food because it is very high in polyunsaturated fats, which is something that triggers a very high level of inflammation. So, avoiding processed food, avoiding dairy I have seen helps diabetics a lot because dairy triggers a lot of inflammation in the body so we make sure anybody who comes on board, especially if they have insulin resistance because it's getting triggered by dairy. We asked them to avoid dairy.

Q. What about refined sugar?

A. If you go to the thrive website you will see a couple of blogs that are talking about sweeteners and which ones are safe to use. So we would advise all diabetics to completely avoid all refined sugar and even jaggery, but then what can you have as sweet, is there on the Thrive website. In one of the blogs that we've written about sweetener so you can go check that out.

Q. Why is that sometimes fasting is higher than PP?

A. That happens because of something called a Somogyi effect. So the Somogyi effect is because of a stress cascade that happens through the night when you wake up your body releases a lot of sugar in the morning. You can google the Somogyi effect. I can't really talk about it like we'll go beyond the time if  I will talk about it. So, you can check that out but sometimes it can be because of an adrenal dysfunction also so see these, then this goes into the sometimes category right like I'm saying, you know, it could be this or it could be that based on if you actually have any recent practice you can send them to us, they will know more what is happening in your body. 

Q.Are there any broader nutrition plan to follow in breakfast, lunch and dinner?

 A. No we don't really do that because you know the thing is each person's body is unique, you have this thing called as bio-individuality right with your genes are unique to you while we are Indians while we have that base Indian genetics, still, what your parents contributed to your DNA is unique to us. So knowing which food you have to eat is a matter of really learning more about your body through your blood test and then finding out what to recommend to the broader community.  People know what is a healthy diet to eat and you can google and google will tell you that eat more fruits and vegetables; avoid processed food; avoid sugar; all that google will tell you that’s generic advice then that's good but that doesn't really help anyone. 

Q. Type -1 is reversible or not?

A. No, unfortunately in our work yet we aren't able to reverse. In type-1 what we do is manage it better. See in Type-1 what happens is the beta cells that produce insulin itself is destroyed. So it requires some external thing that is providing it energy like insulin. So the only thing we have successfully done is to reduce the need for insulin and take away other medication. But we haven’t reversed Type-1 completely.

Impact of Toxins

This is a transcript of the Facebook Live session that was held on 18th July. Link to the talk is here

Sabita: Why the green revolution has started, looking at the growing population of India if you say maybe the government at that time had taken the decision to introduce fertilizers, it was a collaboration between the government and some chemical manufacturing companies to start this revolution. And looking at that they have started the revolution and introduced a lot of fertilizers in the organic or the agricultural field where the fertilizers were introduced in 1965 to grow more and more, grains or whatever the requirement of all our day to day food requirements and rain and everything. So that is where it started with introducing fertilizer and, you know, the farmers were very unaware of all the side effects.

The reason was to start this is to manage the ratio of the global hunger index of India, but then the truth is that India still stands on the 103rd position in the hunger index. So, if you see the bottom line; the truth is that people who had to get benefited by this are again, the government and you know, chemical manufacturing companies. They got all the benefits and on the other hand, farmers, we as a consumer, our environment and our landfill, they all got lots of chemicals and till today we are suffering and we are still yet to overcome that. So that is where the origin of these toxin foods. So if you allow me, I’ll show a small video where you can see how it all started.

Main kuch Scientist nahi hun lekin main sadharan Kisan hu lekin yeh jo dabaayi dekh raha hoon uska jimmedaari pesticide aur chemical hi hain.

So, the video shows where the origin of toxin foods was. And so before 1965, there was only one food which was organically grown so there was no difference of organic or non-organic and all that, you know funda which we have today. 

So the other question which you had asked was: What is the basic difference between organic food and non-organic food? 

So there are few pointers, which is very common and most of us are aware of now. So, that is like organic food and non-organic food. So this non-organic food we'll have all the, you know, pesticides in that organic food again will not have any kind of pesticides or non-organic food we'll have all that, fertilizers manure and chemically treated or you know the landfill, the same way again organic food will have all the natural manures like cow dung and there are a lot of other measures which is being taken care of for organic food. Then in non-organic food again we have a lot of additives, the same way again in organic food we don't have any kind of additives. 

Non-organic food is again has a lot of adulteration in that lot of mixing and, organic food is again is free from any kind of adulteration and all those things so these are you know few very basic differences between organic food and non-organic food, but then the bottom line is non-organic food is in every way starting from the origin, till the end. It reaches our houses loaded with different kinds of harmful chemicals and organic food is free from any kind of chemical so this is the basic difference, we can understand.

Suyash: Okay, thanks a lot Sabita for enlightening us on the difference between toxic food non-toxic food. 

And now I'll move to the second question, and before that I'll just like to inform all the participants that we'll also be having a Q & A session at the end of the session. Just for 10-15 minutes, you can just put your questions in the chat section and we will also be answering them. 

So coming to Mugdha. How do these toxins impact our health, like, how do these affect? If you could enlighten us on the same.

Mugdha: Sure Suyash, and thank you for that wonderful intro. I was a little busy making sure that the session is running live on FB. Also, give me a minute. I just want to share my screen. I have a few slides that I've prepared. 

Suyash: Great. 

Mugdha: And what I'd also like to do is kind of take everyone through the flow of our conversation because I think we have so much information, packed in this one hour. We might actually overextend. So, what we are going to go through is basically the origins of toxic food, the impact of toxin so this is the flow and then in the end we'll have a Q & A. 

So, going back to your questions about the impact of toxins on health. In fact, before I answer that question I wanted to run a quick poll because Sabita just spoke about how, you know, like, Where is the origin of all these toxins in our food I just wanted to ask a quick question. I just wanted to launch a quick poll so everybody who's attending. Can you just answer this question?

Okay, that's interesting. 

That's a majority of people who actually have switched to using organic.

Because I can see that nearly, More than 50% now is saying they've used organic.

Yeah, I'm really happy to see because like what I want to say next about how toxins impact health, then it just makes it a little easier for me to talk about that because everybody is not using organic then they'll wonder what I'm talking about, are actually seeing a majority actually. So 52%, people have voted that they actually have used organic and they mostly use organic food. Alright, cool. So, I'm okay. I'm going to move on to my answer.

And I'm going to end the poll here. Yeah, I'm going to share this.

Okay. So moving on to the question that you had Suyash.  How do toxins impact health?

 So what we've seen so what I, what we do at Thrive. For those of you who are new to Thrive and our work, or you might have joined those sessions a little late. We work primarily with chronic diseases. Right so we work with diseases that might have occurred over time, which includes things like diabetes and obesity and PCOD, PCOS  but we also work with really complex conditions like fibromyalgia and MCPD and all of those. Often we've seen that a lot of people who come to us, the root cause of their diseases is because of a toxin overload that they have in their body.

Now you might, the people listening to this might not really have a major illness as such, but what is important to know that even, you know, small doses of exposure to different toxins, not just the pesticides and fertilizers, I will speak about that as well later. But even the smallest exposure to, you know, toxins from the environment can create symptoms like headache, it can create symptoms like exhaustion, it can actually if you have a toxin overload. It can also create excess weight, it can create skin problems, a lot of times psoriasis and eczema cases that come to us are because of toxin overload.

 So toxins can create a lot of chronic health conditions and they start off very insidiously they might start off small and then over time they build up and become some big condition so that's the impact toxins have on health and different people depending on the genetic structure right depending on their genes will express this toxin overload in different ways. But toxins have a major, major impact on health, and this slide kind of shows all the different ways in which toxins can impact someone's health.

So did that answer your question Suyash or did I leave anything?

Suyash: Yes. So okay, Going ahead.

I would like to know what are actually sources for the toxins and how it impacts but it would be great if you can tell what are the sources like where we get toxins inside a body because you know, I feel that that is everything. There is some kind of toxin or you know it's everywhere around our environment. So can you just throw some light on the sources you know like what are the different sources where you can get toxins?

Mugdha: Sure.

So like I tell so many people it's like literally you're swimming in a sea of toxins right because if you start looking at where we are going, getting these into our body, people will be amazed, again I'm going back to my slide because it just helps me make my point.

So the question is how do they enter us right?

Toxins can enter our body from multiple sources. They can come in from food so one source of toxins from food is of course the pesticides and fertilizers that are sprayed on the food itself right so these are external chemicals that are sprayed on food and when you eat them and Sabita will go much more in detail about that I'm not gonna talk too much about that. But there are other ways in which toxins from food and then come into our body so genetically modified food even if it's organic soy, but because soy is genetically modified that genetically modified soy itself becomes a source of toxins for our body.

Then, in a lot of foods there are hormone mimics right so estrogen is a female hormone a lot of foods actually have estrogen mimics, so soy estrogens or estrogens that are coming from the dairy that you can do a lot of these can also become toxins in our body. And then you have this entire class of chemicals called excitotoxins and, you know, excitotoxins are toxins that once they enter your body they actually start creating irregular neural impulses so they actually start interfering with your brain's communication itself. So these excitotoxins can come in in the form of MSG, which is almost always added into all processed foods, excitotoxins sugar is an excitotoxin right, so sugar you might buy organic sugar, you might buy non-pesticide infused sugar but sugar on its own is an excitotoxin for the brain, which is why we see kids going off and becoming hyper after they consume sugar. 

So sugar is a toxin for the body, and then you have all these processed foods and processed meats like you know if you're buying, for example, sausages and bacon then those have nitrites, nitrates, sulphates, all the hydrogenated oils. Basically, if you look at the list you're in terms of food. These are things that usually come to you from processed food, if you're looking at natural whole food you won't really get so many toxins in from there, but generally, the process of making your snacky junk food a lot of toxins get added, and you might think like somebody might think that oh it's such a small quantity you know it's just like a microgram but even medicines are given to us micrograms only right a single tablet will just have a microgram of that particular active compound that's going to work on your blood pressure or diabetes or whatever. So even these toxins in their micro amounts can still impact human health, and that's one place so that's just food, and then I have eight other names here. Oh, I have nine I'm really bad at math so I have five two times.

And then there is a category that I call dying to look good. Okay so, a lot of women visually, put on so many products on their skin, and on their hair and on their body without knowing that these products contain so many toxins that are actually carcinogens that can interfere with their hormone functions like when we get women with PCOD and PCOS problems or any kind of menstrual problem. Often we find out that the culprit,  I mean yes they have deficiencies and all of that that we know from the blood test but also the products that they use the personal care products the soaps and shampoos and lotions and creams and the you know there are lipsticks that they use those also often have a lot of toxins which can cause health problems. 

Then cleaning products such as Domex and Harpic and all these harsh chemicals have, like, if you look at the back of it, they say, if accidentally consumed, go to Poison Control Center. So on the label itself, tell you that it is poison, and then you are using these products in your house to clean up your house. I don't know in which way that makes sense it's just the way these products are advertised that we end up buying them now like I am really concerned with the amount of hand sanitizer everybody's using with this Covid fear right like, why can't you just use regular soap and water, but everyone's drowning in hand sanitizer and people don't know hand sanitizers have so much triclosan in them, because triclosan is a proven carcinogen. So, you know, the chance of you getting sick by Corona is much lesser than the chance of you getting sick by the hand sanitizer is much higher. 

But a lot of cleaning products also have toxins that enter our body because our skin is one of the most absorptive surfaces it's a living breathing tissue and anything you put on it gets absorbed into your body and then that goes into your liver and I'll get into the liver thing later but cleaning products is another source. 

The air of course, like if anybody here is from Delhi, then, then you know how it can really mess up your head, but even during Diwali for example the number of firecrackers is. It's just insane the kind of pollution that we see we all experience respiratory issues right so pollutants from the air, volatile organic compounds air fresheners all these deodorants even these scented candles often can release these VOC so a lot of toxins and for people who are more sensitive to them. This can impact their health even more. 

So air is one more source of toxins; toxic mold, people don't know this but there is this particular species of coral called mold called Stachybotrys and this mold is particularly toxic because it releases for so if you have spaces or in your house or if you have household surfaces that have mold on them, please please reach out to us we'll help you clean that up in our natural way because this mold can release toxic spores that can create a lot of chronic health issues including something like fibromyalgia. We've had fibromyalgia patients whose condition improved when they actually got out of that moldy house, they were living in.

Water, In India, we have a lot of chlorination of water now what people don't know is, chlorine replaces iodine in their thyroid gland; so the thyroid uses iodine to make thyroid hormones and if chlorine comes in then the thyroid, because all these halogens look-alike structurally right so the thyroid might assume this is Iodine and the chlorine goes and replaces it then people end up having thyroid dysfunction.

So fluoride is another one like I know in certain places in India especially like Andhra Pradesh there are spots where the fluoride content in water is very high, and most women in that area end up with hashimotos and hypothyroidism so fluoride, chlorine, both are thyroid disruptors.

And then in water, because of all the toxic cleaning products, and the personal care products we use often a lot of these things go into our water cycle, and then they come back into our body because earth is a closed system. Water is not being suctioned off by some alien ship right it's all here only whatever we do to this planet remains here. So water also becomes a source of toxins.

 Utensils, a lot of people now are aware that nonstick cookware actually releases carcinogens into their foods. People have stopped using Teflon but if anyone here is still using nonstick then I would highly recommend you ditch that right away. As Teflon long releases carcinogens in your food and there's a very high correlation between using nonstick cookware and chronic health conditions. 

Aluminium again, People don't have a conclusive answer but I'll tell you conclusively that usage of aluminum has been shown to increase the incidence of Alzheimer's. Aluminium as metal can go and replace zinc in your cells and zinc is such a vital mineral for building immunity. And for so many other enzymatic functions so if your aluminium cookware is leeching aluminum into the food and you're eating that to have aluminium deposits from the utensils itself. 

And then all those people who use plastics to heat their food right like microwavable plastic. These things release BPA. These things release carcinogens again so sometimes we end up doing things for convenience without realizing that that convenience is going to cost us more in the long term. 

And I, you know now like I especially feel the need to speak up about vaccines because everybody's waiting for the coronavirus vaccine and they don't know the kind of impact vaccines have on human health.

Vaccines usually have the most lethal forms of all the heavy metals that I've discussed so far: aluminum, mercury. Vaccines have the most bio-absorbable form of this which means these can cause the most damage. Plus vaccines have other chemicals like you know preservatives and adjuvants which are there to preserve the integrity of that vaccine so formalin for example and then there is fetal DNA that is animal DNA that is so much junk in vaccines that can actually go and create a whole host of diseases. So, by taking vaccines please be careful. I would recommend avoiding them as much as possible but that's a topic for another day. But vaccines are another source of toxins in our body.

Then medicines you know the regular medicines that doctors prescribe, and you can get over the counter without even a prescription sometimes a lot of these medicines can contribute to the toxin loads in your body. So birth control pills are either non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin, and then all your antacids, all your antidepressants, all the painkillers that people take for migraines, the statins that people take cholesterol. All of these medicines release toxins in your body and the poor liver has to bear the burden of this.

So that's why when people come to us for their health problems. The first thing that we do is start making a plan to take them off their medicines because if you're taking medicines you're constantly adding toxins to your body. So these are the sources, I try to keep it as short as possible Suyash but I couldn't make it any more compact than this. 

So I'm going to stop sharing and I'm going to hand it over to you now. 

Sabita: Alright, Before going to the next topic. This topic reminds me of one small clip which I had seen. Just to add to Mugdha’s details that how toxins and these kind of chemical ones come into the, you know, environment, and it stays there forever, as Mugdha said, like you know, it just does not evaporate somewhere. So you know it stays there for decades and decades, so I'll just show you one small clipping on that, which will explain the things that you mentioned.

Mugdha: This toxin subject and like you also we've seen right in so many blood tests that heavy metals and chemical toxin overload is actually what is creating yeah and even there's there is research that eating insecticide and pesticide foods actually kills the egg for women, and it might is one of the causes of it, fertility even even declining sperm count can be attributed Yeah, the low fertility rates that we're seeing actually could be usually attributed to the toxins in the environment.

Suyash: Right.

Sabita: Can you see the screen now?

I'll just start the video Keral ko Ishwar ki dharti kahan jaata hai khudarat ne isse khubusarat bakshi hai Keral Sarkar ne Kasargod zille ki uchaa zamino parju ki kheti karna shuru kiya par 1975 se Kaju ke pedon ko kide se bachane ke liye endosulfan naam ke ek keetanushak ka chidkav shuru kiya gaya Kasargod se leker 15,000 acres zameen tak yeh chidkaa gaya Ishwar ki dharti per yaha zeherili barish lagatar 25 saal chali Hindustan ki Zameen par hi nahin; Logon ki raghu mein utar gaya jindagi maut se pathar ho gayi; 5000 se jyada log iss zeher se dabha hue.

This was actually done almost five decades back, but then if you see in the Kerala Kasaragod area. We can still see, you know, there is no organic farming and, you know, still, those chemical effects are seen on people's health in the environment and everywhere. So once these chemicals are induced around us, and you know, in us. Be aware that it is not going to evaporate overnight or, you know, in, even in a few years. So, guys, we have to be really very careful about that.

Sabita: Yeah. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. 

I have seen that now, DDT and lots of incessant pesticides, have been banned globally. But like, why it's in India still being used and why is it not banned in India? or if it depends on what are the chemicals which have been banned in India? If you can just throw some light on the same.

Sure! Actually this is a very good question. So, if I have to number it, then there are at least 66 pesticides or these kinds of chemicals, which are globally banned, and it is actually banned in India as well. So when I say globally banned it is not to be used anywhere for any kind of agriculture, but then this is used in India because, we all know what, how we control things and you know the checking system and everything around us. 

So it is not only used in India. It is used like without any kind of control; any kind of control on the quantity they should have been used. And, you know, they're just used like nobody is checking on the quantity because see every chemical even when it started in 1965, as I said, there were some parameters set for that this is the quantity, which has to be used and how it has to be used and in how much of the carrier water, it is to be or whatever it is to be, what should be the dilution ratio and everything was actually guided, but in India to take advantage of, you know, the maximum benefit of it and you know the maximum growth and the maximum result in the increase in production, and produce, so nobody control that and it is used everywhere in India in all the farming. 

And like we can even just google the list of it there are some complicated name which we don't even you know understand but then yes they are globally banned, and it is used in India, and you know due to this, these particular chemicals they work as a slow poison on our body, and even in environment. So what happens if we see, you know, we can say the ratio like 68% of deaths in India happens due to this chronic illness which Mugdha will also agree with me because this all happens due to all this slow poison which is working on our body, and we are eating it as though, fertilizers and chemicals and pesticides to our food, and we are not aware about that. Only thing is like, you know, they have been encouraged to use the quantity or these kinds of pesticides and chemicals for the benefit of all the manufacturers of these kinds of, you know, the chemicals and all and we are again, the sufferer of this. So on this note if you allow me Suyash. I also have one more clipping which gives a very good, you know, clear picture of how it works.

Suyash: Sure.

Mugdha: Like we were discussing sperm count and fertility is dropped big time and yes deficiency of zinc deficiency B12 deficiency can impact that but we are seeing a big role of toxins and in fact like I was researching on the effect of each of these toxins right so if I had to share all that information this would become a 5-hour talk. It’s insane how toxins impact health.

 Sabita: Can you see Suyash?

Pesticides ka logon ki sehat kya hota hai yah janne ke liye hamari team ne Punjab ko chuna kyunki Punjab ka area Bharat ka do pratishat Matra hai. Lekin yaha desh me istemaal honewali pesticide ke matra 15 se 18 pratishat hai. Akhir itni bhaari matra mein itni zaherali pesticides kyu chidke jaa rahe hai. So now you see how these farmers have been encouraged to use the maximum quantity of it.So the reason why I'm showing all this clipping is that you know how much ever we explain it online but then when we see, and we know the visual effect is always more. And when we get to the fact and we see that how and, you know, why it is happening? So then it gives us a completely different idea that is the reason I'm trying to show the maximum possible clips I have. 

So it's over to you Suyash.

Suyash: Thank you, thank you for sharing this, because a lot of people here will not be knowing that. 

And as we move on, I and Mugdha we're discussing that now know that a lot of toxins, definitely impact our health as you should now what are some most dangerous toxin, you know, which has a specific impact on our health and what symptoms do they give us so that you know we can understand better? 

Mugdha: Yeah, so let's go back to. I'd like to share my slides again because see, all these toxins have an impact on our health right there is no denying that Oh, nitrite will not impact you or sulphide will not impact you. But then, like I said, we are swimming in a sea of toxins right? So if somebody has to prioritize Oh, this is what I need to like first get rid of and then I focus on the smaller ones later. So that's a really great question, thanks Suyash. I'll just go back to my slides and talk of the ones that we have seen in our work so far seem to have a major impact.

So the most dangerous ones in terms of, like, chronic health conditions right. The first there would be heavy metals itself and heavy metals like mercury and aluminum and lead and arsenic and why these are so dangerous is often these heavy metals go and start settling in your tissues like your bones and your bone marrow and your brain. The problem with these heavy metals is often they end up replacing a lot of so for example I spoke of zinc earlier, zinc is an extremely critical mineral when it comes to building immunity when it comes to a lot of enzymatic reactions in the body when it comes to even things like fertility. 

When it comes to even maintaining your gut microbiome so zinc is very very important in the body and often metals like these heavy metals that we've listed copper is a competitor for the minute you have excess copper in your body zinc is going to be depleted copper is not going to take the place of zinc it's just going to go and deplete zinc; aluminium is going to replace the space that a cell has for zinc so they won't even get entry into your cell if there's too much aluminium. Besides much aluminium. Like I spoke earlier right aluminium has been implicated in the lead up to Alzheimer so often, people who have Alzheimer's their brain tissue shows higher levels of aluminium than in non Alzheimer's so the flux that you've seen as I was right so there is a higher level of aluminium in their tissue. 

Mercury. We could do an entire zoom session on mercury; it's that hazardous. And we have seen some really severe cases of mercury poisoning So, where does mercury come in from right mercury can come in from either your dental amalgams, which is, you know, a lot of people who got their dental fillings done maybe 10-15 years ago would have had silver fillings in the teeth and not the typical white enamel filling that is used now that silver is not the only silver that silver is like very little silver mixed up with mercury and put into your tooth I myself have a silver filling. And this mercury from your dental filling can keep leaching like after this session, what we'll do is for all the people who are here and people who registered we'll send a follow up email with some research papers that you can read up on your own because it's really, it's not enough time for me to be able to showcase everything that all of these toxins can do so I'll definitely share mercury research with you. 

But the dental amalgams is one place where mercury can come from, you know, the coal industry, the tar industry and factory smoke itself, that also releases a lot of mercury in the environment.

 Of course if you, if you touch something that had mercury like either a thermometer or you know the CFL bulbs that had mercury so if that broke. And if you clean up that mess that also increases the chances of mercury exposure. Vaccines is a big source of mercury and from the food category fish are one source for Mercury, especially the larger fish, because these fish are in sea and then there is this thing called as biomagnification so they might eat smaller fish that might have mercury overload and then over time this smaller mercury overload will build up in this big fish's body. And then when you eat this fish, this Mercury is now in the most bioavailable form ethyl mercury and that's going to get absorbed into your tissues immediately. 

Mercury can cause everything from Autism in tiny children to Genetic mutations and, like if the mother is exposed to a lot of mercury in pregnancy, there is a very high chance of deformities in the offspring. Mercury can create anxiety and depression. We've had a lot of patients who have mercury poisoning and who have severe mood disorders, and you know they don't even know that it's because of the mercury they just think that's their personality type. And once we help them get rid of a Mercury in whatever way we do, they start seeing a lot of improvement. Mercury can also create digestive disorders but Mercury is really the worst because it's a neurotoxin so it actually goes and damages your nerves and it messes with your brain big time aluminium I already spoke off.

 Lead is another one that can actually create inflammation in your liver. I do have a slide later of symptoms of toxin overload but lead on its own, and I think a lot of people are aware about lead because around 10 years ago or something there was news about how Lead can lead to cancer and lead can create a whole lot of chronic health issues.

Arsenic, if you read Agatha Christie novels, then you'll know arsenic was one of her favorite ways of murder. Slow poisoning with arsenic is what a lot of her perpetrators in her novels would use to kill their victims, especially like wives frustrated with their husbands and then the husband would die suddenly but then the culprit would be arsenic poisoning. So arsenic can poison our body over time. And finally, what my research has shown is that often rice has very high levels of arsenic because of how rice grows. So rice needs a lot of water and, you know, the rice, the grass, I mean the plant is steeped in water for a very long time so what happens is that water like being in that water swamp area, ends up releasing arsenic from the ground and rice nodes apparently are exceptionally great at absorbing arsenic. So rice. If it's grown in contaminated soil can have an arsenic overload.

Pesticides like DDT so I was saying that I’ll send the DDT research links again after the talk but DDT itself.

It is very very interesting to see that the polio thing that happened right like when polio cases went on the rise and when polio was a very big pandemic like Corona is right now, it significantly correlates with the use of DDT. So, and all the symptoms of DDT poisoning are exactly like the symptoms of poliomyelitis. So, Most of these pesticides in this clip that Sabita has shown us can very clearly see the kind of impact that chemical fertilizers and pesticides have on the human body. 

The level of deformities and the level of issues because of endocrine disruptors are toxins that can actually mess with your endocrine gland. So we have these glands that make hormones in our body from the thyroid hormone to insulin to even your adrenal hormones to your pituitary hormones right so all these hormones are made in the body to maintain a state of balance and endocrine disruptors are toxins that can go in, or disrupt this hormone balance. 

So, like I said earlier, soy estrogens and then estrogen coming in from the dairy industry right? A lot of our cows nowadays are pumped with estrogen to increase their yield of milk, and I've had cases of men whose estrogen levels were higher than me and my team members combined. Okay so, a man whose estrogen level was higher than two women. And this is because the estrogen was coming in from the dairy that he was having and these Xenoestrogens can impact. So that's why a lot of girls are hitting puberty as early as eight and a half or nine years a lot of men are having issues with delayed puberty right. So puberty onset is delayed so either their typical expression of masculine characters like hair facial hair or hair that is repressed or they have this condition called as gynecomastia where they develop like, you know, something that's similar to breast all because of the excess estrogen that's coming in from the food supply. 

And there are other estrogen mimics that are there in our personal care products, the ones I spoke of earlier. Even BPA from plastic right so all the plastic containers that you use or if you're somebody who is using Bisleri water all the time or these bottled water, all the time then a lot of BPA from that company I personally always use glass bottles. I never use plastic. This plastic can also disrupt your endocrine hormones and it can cause hormonal imbalances so either early periods in girls or PCOD, PCOS kind of issues or you know gynecomastia or male breast or delayed puberty in boys.All of these can happen due to endocrine disruptors. 

GMO foods I also mentioned these earlier, but these are foods that are genetically modified to either increase yield or to become pest resistant or drought resistant and these are foods, when anybody modifies genes or something, it means that that food is no longer in its natural form our genes have not been tampered with yet, unless Bill Gates gets to do what he wants to do our genes have not been tampered yet. So, what happens is when we eat these genetically modified foods our body cannot really process them the way natural food does and then that starts creating a whole lot of diseases. So these GMO foods themselves start becoming like toxins in our body and typically the most common GMO foods we see now are soy, wheat, corn and certain animal products like sometimes to increase yield again; these cows or even chicken for example the broiler chicken that you eat they injected with hormones right? So then the entire gene itself; sequence itself gets modified so these are again things that the body would treat as toxins. 

So what is a toxin?

A toxin is something that the body would consider as poison, and would find a way to remove because it knows that this thing is there in the body is going to create disease. 

And the last category of the most dangerous toxin but I think the one that we should speak a lot about is vaccines because vaccines, like I said earlier has aluminum and mercury in its most bio-absorbable form which is really bad for the body and all the other preservatives the formalin and the formaldehyde; all the other adjuvants that are added to maintain that vaccines integrity. All of these are really harmful to human health and, in my opinion, these are the five most dangerous toxins that one should pay attention to and figure out how to eliminate, so we'll talk about the elimination and detox but these are the top five in my list.

Suyash: Thank You as we all have become aware of what are the sources of toxins and how they impact our health. 

Now it's time to know how we can identify food, whether it's organic or not? Sabita if you can just know, throw some light on that; Like whether this food is toxic or nontoxic or how do we identify, because that's one of the biggest challenges I see in almost everyone who raises questions regarding the same. Can you give some practical tips regarding the same then that would be great?

Sabita: Okay, so see basically.

First thing I would like to just tell you that you know there was the one saying, from one big writer. I can share the name later that he said a few decades back; that today what we are eating is actually not food. It is something like food. So you know, we have changed over the years so much that we don't even need to eat the food. It is like something like the food we are eating but we don't know what we are eating. So now it's time that we should know what we are eating, so there are a few and simple tips I would like to give to our listeners that you know how we can identify our organic food. 

So, you know, the first thing that we have to see and understand is that we should never go by the look of it. So anything, you know, which is very beautiful, very shiny and looks alike and you know, for example, tomatoes, all are in the same color and you know, the same size and a nice red. So, we have to think that nature never gives us things which you know look-alike always like even if you see human beings we are all different sizes, different shapes, different colors and everything.

 So, out of those things which we are eating. Are you now made so beautiful and look alike and so these are a few things which we have to always keep in mind that you know nature will not give you something which is as beautiful as they look on the shelf of our market. So, inorganic, we should always see something which is looking very beautiful and shiny. We should actually get suspicious immediately that what is wrong with this food because then it is coming directly from the farms, it is not looking alike and it will actually not look that beautiful.

So My first tip is you should always ‘Love the Ugly.’ So we need to understand why it is looking like that. And what is the reason behind that? And so that's the first tip I would like to give. 

The second tip is short and simple. So anything which is very big in size, or if you pick up dudhi or any fruit, in that case, papaya or anything, so it has a natural size of it and if you grow it organically, it will grow only till that size and it will not grow very big and, you know, so the thing is, we have to also see the size of it. naturally grown food or organically grown food will not be very, very large in size.

Then, the third tip is the smell and the taste of it, get an organic bunch of, you know, coriander at home and then you chop it, you will immediately feel the difference. Now you know you are smelling that and you are cooking that or when you are making that so that you will immediately understand. So these are a few things which we see. 

Apart from that, one more, a very basic thing that we need to see is insects, the moment we see some insects in our  Palak or in any of our fruit we get scared. Oh my god, throw it away we can't use it. But, you know, if we say that insects are even more clever than human beings, they understand where they should go and what they should eat. They know there is no pesticide there to kill us and that is the reason they go there and they eat that food. So, why they're going there is because there is a life in that food. 

So what we say everything works as a Prana. So if there is a Prana, then the insects will go there and anything which has life; so Mugdha will also give more insight on that like any food which has life in it, it will give some nutritious value to us, compared to things which we are eating which are lifeless. 

So never get scared of the insects. So they come, they eat their part and they go, but then they will not have you know where compared to the harm which is we are getting from the pesticides, so we have to be very very careful about it.

 In that context, I can share one story with you, that once we had visited our farm long back so that was actually the ‘Dudhi farm.’ So you know all the dudhi’s were nicely grown and in big size, and had very good colors and everything. There was only one small patch of dudhi, only a single patch of dudhi which was like you know, in some different crooked shape and has bird marks in it and not grown completely which we and we thought. 

So then we asked that farmer, what is wrong with this particular batch of the dudhi? Is it not good? So he said No-No this is free from pesticides that we have kept only for our family we don't sell that. This is how you know it happens, we have to be very careful when we are choosing the food, and these are a few tips which I can share for now, and yeah on that particular thing which I gave you the example I have the video also to show you. Just give me one moment.

Mugdha: I like your videos a lot Sabita!

But once you start thinking of all the places toxins come right, then it becomes like a really scary world. Oh My God! Everything has poison in it.

Suyash: What to eat? What to avoid? And how to even mitigate that effect. What does one do if somebody has been exposed to it for a lifelong?

Sabita: Can you see the screen?

Suyash: Yeah. Yes

Sabita: Yeh Maharashtra ke Nashik Zille ke Angur Desh Bhar Mein mashhur Hai taazzi taazzi Rass bhare anghur dekhke muh me paani aa jata hai. Lekin Jo Kisan Inn anguron ko Ugha raha hai vah inhe nahin khaaega; 6 saal pehle muh me chale lagg gaye te uss time anghur ka season te aur mein roz anghur khaata ta Lekin anghur ke kheton me chemical spray karte te. Aur fir mene mere kheton ka anghur khaana bandh kar diya. Pesticides hum karte hai lekin quality dikhne ke liye bante hai uske nutrients kam ho jaate hai aur poison andar jaati hain vyaapari purpose ke lye karte hai. Mene alag se jagah kheti ki usme humne bina chemicals lagaye hue sabzi tayar kiye aur hum vahi khaate hai.

Ferozepur gaon ke Surendra Rajput Duniya bhar ko pesticides bhechne wale bina chemical ki kheti Karte Hain. Yeh dawaiya jo sabi mere se leke jaate hai voh keede maarne ki dawai hoti hai. Mein apne khet ke andar na iska istemal nahin karta hun yeh mein  isliye karta hun taaki humare jo sehat hena voh thik rahe Jo body hai usme koi asar nah aye.

Valsad Gujarat ki Nilesh Desai Bhi Apne aur apne parivar ke liye alag se ann ughate hain. Mera ek khet hai usmein mein ekdum deshi vo mere liye rakha hai aur mera dusra khet hai usme rasayani use karta hai yeh isliye kyunki jyaada munafa mile, jo drum me daalte hai dawa vo drum ek saal tak usme smell rehti hai vo toh drum hai plastic ka toh admi par to uska asar hoyega hi na uska. Ghar ke wale mein nai daalte vo bharish ke pehle hum nikal dete hai. Vo maal hum hamare rishte daaro me hi dete hai aur jo commercial aate hai vo sab market me jaata hai. Iss zamane me koi bi vastu dikhaav pe chalta hai; badiya laga toh le lo vo kaisa hai voh dekhta nai jab commercial baat aa jaati hai toh samne wala marr jaye toh bi koi sunta nai 

I think we got a fair idea about what he was talking about. So over the period of time, even these farmers had understood that you know what is good for them and how harmful these pesticides are, and that is the reason they have kept these things aside only for their near and dear ones. And we have been done with all the chemicals today.

Suyash: Thank you for those wonderful tips to identify what actual organic food looks like and how we can differentiate with the non-organic foods. 

Now Mugdha, coming to you again. Now we know that we have so much toxin on us we are ingesting so many toxins around us now, what are the steps we can take to detoxify from them or ingest them out? So if you can just throw some light on that.

Mugdha: Yeah, sure. I will.

The thing about detox is a lot of people think detox means drinking green juice in the morning and then like this having lime water in the day and you know then say detox hogaya. Like, I can't tell you the number of people who've been, like, on Instagram post pictures I'm detoxing when I'm doing a juice cleanse; detox doesn't really work with detox is not about drinking juices you really have to understand what detox means deeply because a lot of these, in fact, I'll just go back to sharing my slide and then I talk about this. 

Because what happens with toxins whether you're ingesting toxins from, whether it's airborne toxins or whether it is, you know, toxins that have gone in from your utensils like aluminum and your non-stick or whether it's toxins that have gone in from your personal care products. 

All of these toxins are there in your body nice to just drinking juice is not going to remove them. Yeah, going back to my slide so this is what happens really even in a healthy body. Let's say you're not overexposing yourself to toxins like maybe somebody like Sabita and me who and you also Suyash, we're very careful about everything that we put into our body about the soaps and shampoos that we use and our toxin exposure is minimal. 

Even in that case. Now, this is typically where toxins enter from right so they can airborne toxins they'll go in from the lungs if it's something that you're applying on your body or you know some chemical that you get exposed to or when you're washing your bathroom with, or even when you're like, let's say somebody came in and wipe your floor in your house. You didn't even touch the Domex or that phenol whatever was there in that bucket but you just walked on that floor which is why with these chemicals, the skin on your foot is still got to absorb these toxins in your body.

Gut/Intestine, Of course, are the foodborne toxins are the medicines that you're taking all these waterborne toxins that might be going in. In addition, if you have been injected with vaccines, then those additional toxins have gone right. So this is all, all the sources from where toxins can go in. 

Now what happens in the body is; from whatever source a toxin has gone into first go to the liver for detoxification because that is the primary place for detox the liver is so badly under. I mean last it's underestimated big time right in. Everybody talks about the heart, everybody talks about the brain, everybody's not talking about the respiratory system in the lungs because of the COVID fear. Right. 

So I had heard somebody say this once in the life of the liver, depends on the liver, right. So, the kind of life you live really depends on your liver cells and I think in our blood test and the analysis we see this so many times right we have chronic diseases most often have a really dysfunctional liver. 

All of these toxins first go to the liver, and then the liver processes them, then the liver so I won't go into that phase one phase two phase three now because it just won't have enough time. But the liver has different phases through which it breaks down different toxins and then decides from there these are going to be excreted. So the excretion points for toxins are from your skin; from your sweat. Then when somebody sweats toxins go out to the kidneys, for example, when you urinate a lot of toxins from the body are carried out so that's why your urine color also changes depending like if you've gone to take some medication you'll see a change in the color of your urine right so kidneys are a second re-system for toxins to be treated.

Your colon, so basically your bowel movements and being able to, you know, defecate and have healthy bowel movements is another process through which toxins leave your body and the last is through your lungs. When you exhale, again, toxins leave your body.

So, this is the entire process. Now just drinking juice is in no way going to really help this process unless you know what you're doing in the juices and the toxins again are of two types, there are fat-soluble toxins like the Mercury's and all of that and there are water-soluble toxins.

So fat-soluble toxins go and now let's say your liver is not functioning well let's say you have a fatty liver or let's say your liver is already overloaded with toxins so much that it can do its basic job well then what happens is the body says ‘Oh! I can't push this out,’ or maybe your kidneys are not working well or maybe you know your sweat mechanisms are not right or maybe you have a digestive dysfunction and which is why you're constipated or something like that and you can't pass bowel movements frequently so maybe one of your exit pathways are not working well.

 Then those toxins come back in the body and the body says oh I have to store them someplace like let me not keep them in circulation because if it's in circulation is going to harm the body so just keep them in safekeeping space. So the fat-soluble ones go and start sitting in your fat cells; in your bone marrow; in your liver and in your central nervous system, like mercury that I spoke off. Mercury goes and sits in the central nervous system and the brains. 

The water-soluble ones because they are water-soluble then they keep floating around so they go into your joints; they go into your blood and that's typically the process of, you know, this is the process of detoxification and elimination and if this process is not working well, then the excess toxins are going to start getting stored in the body. And it's when the toxins get stored that we start seeing the disease. So if the toxins keep getting eliminated generally they won't be a disease state but it's only when storage starts happening, then we start seeing the disease.

Now, the question that you asked right: How does one really detox?

So before you even begin to detox you have to first understand what is your personal toxin load right. So, what kind of toxins do you have? Where are they resting mostly?

So that is the question to ask first before somebody even goes on detox. And typically, you know, the kind of bodily responses to toxins would be skin rashes for sure because again like I said the skin is one mechanism for toxin exit. And if the skin is not doing this properly then a lot of toxins may start depositing subdermally below the skin and then you might start seeing acne and skin rashes, allergies are another response mechanism a feedback mechanism that the body can give for excess toxins.

Joint pain arthritis, autoimmune disorders because when there are excess toxins stored in the body then the body's immunity also starts getting impacted also the liver is one place for her immune system to work really well. If the liver is overloaded with toxins, then you start having autoimmune disorders as well, heart problems, chronic fatigue is another big-time response mechanism that we've seen when toxic overload happens; where people are feeling exhausted because if your toxins are getting stored cellularly, then you know all your enzymatic reactions your energy production mechanisms are going to be impacted fatigue is one; diabetes because your liver and pancreas are deeply connected so sometimes the toxins that are overloading your liver can also start overloading your pancreas, that can start getting diabetes, other stuff so you can read this.

But a lot of these conditions, actually are indicative of toxin overload more than anything else and typically what functional, I mean what doctors do, is they just look at this reaction that's happening in the body and give you a medicine for it as I tell you you have a skin rash and you have acne let me give you a steroid cream to apply on it.

Okay, you have high BP let me give you BP medicine to bring down the BP; if you have an autoimmune condition, let me give you an immunity suppressant so that you won't get; if you have pain, let me give you painkillers to kill the pain, but if those medicines add on to the toxin load and it never resolves the root cause right so the condition just keeps getting worse. 

So what I recommend and what we do at Thrive also is we always get people to do their blood test to understand what is the level of toxins that they have. So when somebody comes to us with a particular condition, we want to rule out all the possible root causes, out of toxins is a major one so we get the basic test and so liver function test for example can tell us if there is indeed a toxin overload in the body and if anyone is interested right we can. After the thing, we can send you details on how you could figure out which tests are needed. 

Oh yeah, I have a nice cool poll that I wanted to run. 

That's it. So, have you experienced any of these symptoms that I just spoke of because then there is a possibility that you could have a toxin overload in the body.

Mugdha: And sometimes it's so easy to get rid of these conditions without having to take medication but you just find out that if this is the root cause, we'll get rid of the root cause and the condition is gone. 

Wow, that's 61% that I'm seeing right now.

But let's wait for another 30 seconds and then we'll end the poll.

There are also other expensive tests that you know you can get done to specifically find out a load of mercury and all but we don't usually recommend that because they're very expensive. Most of those tests are not even done in India though they're usually done abroad in Germany and then your hair and your nails samples are taken and then the courier to Germany and the best I did. So, we usually at Thrive we don't usually recommend those tests unless it's a very critical case that it's a very high overload of a particular metal, but generally from the simple liver function; CBC kidney function tests we can find out what is the toxin overload in most people. 

And let's end the polling and I want to share the results. 

So that's 65% of the audience right now who mostly eat organic food, who are saying they're experiencing some of these symptoms that could be a result of a toxin overload itself right, and that's what it's not just food right toxins can come into the body from so many places. It's always best to figure out what is your toxin overload and then move on to detox.

And then I'm taking you to the next slide which talks of detox. Alright so what does your body need for detox; it needs two things. One is it needs the right nutrition because you can't detox. If you're deficient. So if you're just doing juices like the one here at the picture I put up here. This is typically what most people do for detox and this doesn't really work because it might not even give you all the nutrients so people don't know that protein is an essential part of a detox process because your body uses protein, like all these amino acids, taurine and glycine and all of that, to actually enable the phase two phase three detox pathways so protein is a critical component of detox.

 If somebody is giving your detox plan without any protein in it, that plan is not detox. That plan is just fasting, a reduced-calorie thing which will still make you feel good because fasting and being in reduced calorie states is not a bad thing but that is not a true detox. 

Secondly, you need vitamins like your B vitamins and then you need vitamin C, which again is a very important right. So you might need supplementation also if your body's already deficient in these vitamins and then you need minerals right so you need your zinc you need magnesium you need all of these minerals, for a successful detox. So this is just the foundation right?

Once you have this basic foundation in place once you have the right nutrients in place, then the second step of your detox includes making sure your detox pathways the image I showed before right your kidney, your skin, your bowel, and your ability to breathe out toxins. 

All of these should be open and the liver and kidneys are hard for you to know whether they're working well unless you look at your blood test; at least bowel functionality most people know you're having a regular motion every day without too much trouble then you know your bowels are working pretty well. But the liver and kidney most people don't know if they're actually ready for a detox or not so it's best to get the blood test done.

Sweating is an important part of detox now sweating can be done in two ways: You could either do a hot sauna and sweat, because that will just remove toxins from your skin, or you can do like good workout and sweat. The advantage of working out and sweating is because then it also improves your ability to exhale out the toxic because it requires more oxygen. So, when we do the detox for people who are on board for our programs, right. Usually do a detox at a much later stage, because we have first to make sure that the foundation is right. But in our detox, we make sure they're having some kind of a workout on detox days also because that includes not just the sweating capacity but also the breath capacity. So, this is what your body needs for detox.

Of course, when you're detoxing them processed foods and making sure you're not eating anything that is not organically procured, I mean that's the basic that's the foundation right like you can try to do the detox and then eat conventionally grown produce because you're trying to remove toxins in putting in new toxins into your body. 

So, these are the two components of detox that first is nutrition, second is making sure your detox pathways are functional, unless that is happening, there is no point in doing the detox. So that's my answer again it was a pretty long answer I don't know how much we're overshooting in terms of time, but I really feel to do justice to this. I had to give this answer.

Suyash: Yeah, so thanks a lot Mugdha for giving so much detailed view on how the  perfect detoxification process looks like and where most people miss.

Coming to you Sabita something about the environment, like, what are actually the effects of plastic waste generation from food items on the environment? And like how the initiative taken by you guys is helping the environment? Can you throw some light on the same?

Sabita: Plastic waste generation and the side effects and the effects of that we all are aware of now. So we really do not need to get into a lot of figures and facts about that. But just to put across, whatever plastic waste is generated in India, it is almost if you take an average of it is almost 11 kg per capita consumption per person, it is in India. And out of that production if you say more than 43% is used only for packaging, and especially for food packaging. And out of that, you can say only about 8% to 10% is recyclable. And that recycling also happens in very complex processes and very expensive ways.

So the rest of the 38 to 40% of that if what we say is still there in our environment and it is, you know, it cannot be recycled anymore. And then slowly it also goes to our own landfills and water bodies and all.

Then we have already seen a lot of videos of how it goes and chokes our marine animals and you know what kind of how it provides it to you know all these animals, and even to human beings. And so coming to the health part of it, even when we say that you know, almost for more than 43 to 48% of plastic is used for the food packaging. 

So, is it a good idea?

When we know that the plastic is loaded with so much toxin and our food is coming, packed in that plastic and then we are using that food too we have to think, is that a good option for us? So, taking this as a consideration of what Adrish has taken the initiative is that looking at all the problems what we started with, like the toxin foods, then the plastic waste, and then you know the farmer part of it that we'll come to that that how the farmers are affected due to all this thing. So, taking into consideration all these different points. 

We started with doing, or you know, organic farming, we encourage farmers across India. We have more than 9000 farmers associated with attrition, who do only and only our organic farming, or you know attrition, and we do take produce from them. So by doing that we encourage farmers to do organic farming. 

And when it comes to the packaging part of it, buying organic non-toxic food in a toxin loaded plastic packaging loses its purpose, right. So we have to go, you know, plastic-free packaging so in address what we have done that we have made it completely plastic-free where you are welcome to bring in your own containers and fill in as much as you need. 

Otherwise, we have you know recyclable paper bags or the cloth bags where you can fill in your stuff. So by doing that we are not creating any kind of plastic waste and also the food waste, because you know when we take in packets, so it is the full packet of a particular quantity, and you have to take that whether you need that much or you don't. So by doing this, taking in your own container or in an open format. You can also take as much as you need it. So we are also reducing a lot of food wastage.

And then, you know, going further it is not only about food; as Mugdha said that it is not only food which gives us toxins there are different thing like starting from your morning; toothpaste and your plastic brush and, you know, the all these of moisturizers and the soaps, the cosmetics what you use, then coming to household, you know, the floor cleaners or the toilet cleaners or the hand wash.

Even the laundry wash because if you wash in that chemical lobby. You know the laundry cleaner and then you wear those clothes so in every way these kinds of chemical induce in our body, and in our environment. So, you know, we have solutions for all of this like we have dant manjan; we have plastic-free or toothbrushes we have reusable straws we have all kinds of floor cleaner; toilet cleaners and, you know, you name it, and we have it so we have we are trying to provide a very healthy and holistic way of living, where you get all the solutions which are plastic-free.

 So moving on to how you cook your food. As she mentioned that you should not use the aluminum or the nonstick and all. So what should you use? So, we also have solutions for that we have the earthen cookware for that we have some wooden cookware for that, and how you eat, we have some Casaware and the copperware, you know, they all have their own trace minerals actually as she said that copper overload is not good. 

I just saw some questions even in the chat that should we drink water in copper?

Yes, we should. But How much is very important. The quantity is very important so maybe a glass to a maximum one and a half to two glass of copper water what you should have in a day. So, people start doing, you know, overdoing everything that okay we heard somewhere that the copper water is good. So we should keep on drinking over the day, so it shouldn't be restricted. We should be very wise in deciding that what we are doing is the quantity right; is the way we are doing it is right. So, we have solutions for all that, then. So this was the part of human health. 

But then, at the same time the environmental health is also very very important because you know somehow that is also a part of us and we have to take care of that. So by taking this initiative. We also do not harm the environment. The first thing is the plastic waste goes into the environment which we spoke about. But if we are not using any kind of chemical product; for example, like if we have these, you know the fertilizers and everything used so it remains in our landfill.

 Then when you use all these chemicals per household, like, let's say for example for phenols and, and all these chemicals. So after you say that it goes into our water system. And then finally it lands to the sea or wherever you say, and then it remains there always.

So we also have to avoid every possible way of the toxins, which we are using on our body, and we are also releasing on the environment. So by doing all this thing, we have taken care, starting from the farmer and the organic farming health of our consumer; health of our environment, going completely plastic-free and waste-free, and also we are giving employment to the all rural area women because all the processing grinding and everything that happens is as you all know that nothing goes through the mill. 

In Adrish produce, everything is through a hand process. So, they also get employment and by doing all this with Aderish. It is a complete cycle we have tried creating, which is good for our environment for our bodies; for our farmers and their families, and without creating any harm to anybody. So this initiative Adrish has taken, and you know it is actually doing a lot of good to everyone, with support of all.

And we also want people to get aware of all this and make others aware. So you know, at the end of the day when we live; we should be completely toxin-free in all the different ways. So this is the initiative of Adrish. I hope I answered your question.

Mugdha: I love what you guys do because my comb is from Adrish; my steel straws are from Adrish. And like now in the lockdown it wasn’t for me to come and pick up stuff but otherwise like I live alone right so for me it's so easy to come in buy small quantities like that yeah I just wanted like hundred grams dried bananas because I didn't have to buy an entire packet and I could just come in to buy that. 

And the fact is I can get the soap and like everything right, I need it right there. So you guys have multiple stores also now?

Sabita: Yes, yes. In Pune, we already have three stores. We have in Delhi; we have in Mumbai. And we had a few more plans during this lockdown and everything went for a toss but Yes we have more plans in different cities and then in Pune a few more stores. We just want the maximum number of people to get benefitted from this.

Mugdha: See at Thrive our mission is to meet 1 million people and so many times people who come to us like they, they want to heal and then they don't get access to good quality food or organic stuff, and then the entire healing process starts getting delayed right. It's not like they don't have the intention, but it's just that the supply is not available. 

So I'm like you know if Adrish was there in all places like. It's really I think we are lucky to be in Pune and like Banner, Suyash and I keep talking like we have our patients from across India; across the globe at least outside India it's easier but for people that say in Gurgaon, they don't have that many options or like you know it's far and few so we should have more Adrish’s happening.

Sabita: So that reminds me that you are in Baner and now we have a shop in Bhandarkar Road also. So we have access to people around that area and  Kothrud. And we have it in Koregaon Park. In Mumbai, we have in Andheri Lokhandwala which has recently opened. People in north Delhi we have in Saket Delhi, so you know we have covered so far so much.

Suyash, I can see some questions can I go through the ones that I like.

Q.Can you please explain how we know if the liver and kidney are ready for detox?

A. It's very simple; Send us your blood test any recent ones that you have. And we can take a look at it and if they're very old then obviously that data is not useful but if there recent may be something we can just tell you if you need to do any further work or if it's okay for you to go ahead. In fact, Rutuja is here and even when we send an email, we'll send links on how you can get in touch with us but blood tests are the best way to know, what is the internal state of your body because externally, you don't know right some symptom like people who have itchy eyes might think it's an allergy to pollen where it might be a vitamin A deficiency and vitamin A again is a vital nutrient when it comes to detox. So, whatever is happening externally might not be the best reflection of what might be happening internally. Best is, you know, get your blood tests done and that's the really most accurate way of finding out. 

Q. Does cooking kill the pesticide, especially leafy vegetables?

A. No basic cooking does not kill pesticide; cooking can kill bacteria, to some extent, and that is the reason we say that then vegetables and all you should not have raw, but then pesticide as we showed in the video also and we explained that pesticides once it is sprayed on your food. It stays there like it does not get killed by anything. Instead, you will get killed by using those pesticides continuously. It does not kill pesticides.

Q. What's the difference between natural farming and organic farming?

A. Well, Natural Farming is something which is done using the natural resources, which is, you can say, compared to conventional farming it is much better, but then natural farming need not be 100% organic farming, because in the process of organic farming, there are a few parameters. If you start with the soil part of it, how is the soil and what is the quality of soil, whether the soil has been kept organic for almost more than 10 years or so. Then what is the kind of seeds we are using is it an indigenous variety. Is it a Non-GMO, you know, seeds, whatever we use in our, in organic farming they are all Non-GMO seeds, what we use for that is there, then you know what is the kind of Manure and fertilizers and everything that we are using, and then they go on like the pesticide part and then also how do you preserve it like for example there's a chemical called Sulfans which is used to preserve the food, all your grains. So what happens is that sulfans work on your body as a slow poison over the years. Nowadays we are seeing at a very early age we start getting back pain or some bone problems. So, Sulfans are something which works, you know, on your bones, and it depletes the quality of it over a period of time. So, when we are talking about organic, it is end to end. Like, as I said, starting from the soiling sowing and the fertilization and the harvest of that and how do you preserve it and how does it reach till you. So, that is organic. And natural farming happens like you are using everything which is naturally available, but then we may not look into all this parameter in detail. So, that is the difference between organic and natural farming. 

Q.Are Adrish products available online for purchase?

A. Yes so presently we are doing home deliveries from the store, so you can reach out to us, we will share the numbers and we can do the delivery. And we are also available on Zomato, Dunzo and Swiggy, and everything. And, you know, we have more than 600 products; so we are in the process of uploading all of them on our website. Q.Is homeopathic medicine toxin free?

A. Yeah, I think medicine is, see I have not studied homeopathy so I don't understand how those medicines work. I know they work on a principle of dilution. My only issue with homeopathy is often the pills that are recommended are either sugar-based or lactose based so if you have an intolerance to lactose like if you are very allergic to dairy then those, even those small pills can over time create some kind of dysfunction. And the thing about medicine is the word should be to end, taking those medicines as soon as possible right the goal should not be to take medicines and wonder if they're free of toxins or not. So if you're taking medicines for something then the goal should be to find out why you are taking that medicine and to stop taking that. That’s my perspective, I haven’t studied homeopathy in depth. I only know that medicines are sugar-based or lactose based.

Sabita: If I can add to that Suyash.
